Hi all,
Hoping someone can help me recover my drive. I've been trying to flash my ASUS BW-16D1HT (firmware 1.01) to 3.10MK on Linux (Pi OS aarch64) using makemkvcon 1.18.3.
I ran the following command which completed successfully (both "Sending flash image" and "Programming flash" hit 100%):
sudo makemkvcon f -d /dev/sr0 rawflash -i ASUS-BW-16D1HT-3.10-WM01601-211901041014.bin
After rebooting the drive now shows as HL-DT-ST BD-RE WH16NS40 BOOT — so it's stuck in bootloader mode because I didn't include the full flag.
I've tried everything I can think of to recover it:
rawflash full with both the ASUS 3.10MK and LG WH16NS40-NS50 1.05 bin files — "No drive tool logic found in SDF.bin"
Downloaded the standalone sdf.bin from makemkv.com/sdf.bin and used --sdf-file — same error
Tried --sdf-type flags and boot=MT1959 Boot JB8 — same error
Tried MakeMKV 1.17.6 OSS — still sdftool 2.6, same result
Tried on Windows 11 via USB passthrough with makemkvcon64.exe — same error
SDFtool Flasher GUI 1.3.6 — detects drive but says "does not have correct drive platform (MT1959)" and RECOVER is greyed out
The drive is connected via USB (Prolific bridge, external enclosure). I don't have bare metal SATA available.
Before the flash failed I did successfully dump the firmware:
dump_full_ASUS_BW-16D1HT_1.01_211302051930_K9KF23J3649.bin
Unfortunately this was in /tmp and got wiped on reboot before I could save it properly.
Drive details from sdftool:
makemkvcon f -l shows: HL-DT-ST_BD-RE__WH16NS40_BOOT
makemkvcon f -d /dev/sr0 help previously showed MTK19xx firmware module v1.30
Is there any way to recover this over USB without bare metal SATA/DOS? Any help massively appreciated.

You should never have flashed it!!!! This is an older, pre 2016 model with the incompatible MT1939 drive platform.services@kadam.cloud wrote: ↑Sat Apr 11, 2026 12:54 pmHi all,

Nornally you would recover it on Windows using SDFtool flasher's RECOVER method. In the SDFtool Flasher thread, at the bottom of the first post are links to the tool and also the old ASUS BW-16D1HT 1.01 firmware.
But you may have fucked it completely with all the wrong shit you have tried.
You could try the old modified ASUS flasher as this flasher ignores most checks so it may/may not work but worth a try... The only other option left if that doesn't work is an old computer that has IDE mode so you can use Dosflash for recovery.
Cheers

Thanks for your reply.
Sounds like I've royally fucked it up, yes. I bought this for £70 on Alixpress. Honestly, I haven't really got hours to pour over obscure methods. I've already spent hours messing around with this damn thing.
What would you suggest? I just want to buy a drive that's already flashed, or one that is easy to flash.
Thanks
