ASUS BW-16D1X-U not reading discs anymore - advice?

Post by epicchancellor »

My Asus drive has been acting up, not reading any media whatsoever, it won’t even read a cleaning disk I bought to try and clean the lens. I tried some compressed air and that didn’t do the trick. It makes a ticking sound when reading the disc and after 15 seconds or so it says there’s no disc inside. Any advice or is the drive just dead? I got it for Christmas in December so I’m hoping it’s not dead.

What drive do you have? (mkv drive info)
From what I have observed with a pioneer drive is that when it starts making ticking sounds the laser is going or it's gone.
LG drives not sure. They been pretty strong so far.

The drive in mine is an LG.
Power it off for 5 mins by unplugging the power
Then see if it works

How should I go about that? Take the enclosure off and isopropyl alcohol?

yeah

eject tray
unplug drive with tray out
pop off front bezel clips on sides and bottom with plastic tool
undo screws from bottom will be under stickers if you have an s13, 213 does not have stickers.
flip backover and remove top cover
clean lasers with a lint free cloth or qtip and alcohol and dry with another do this 2 times and do not let it air dry you must remove the residue with a dry one!

It should still be under warranty. If your brave enough you can open the Asus shell and get to the drive and open the drive and clean the lasers that way.

On the bottom of the Asus case pell of the two rear foots . There are two screws that need to be unscrewed. Carefully prey open the shell all around. (Do not yank up the Shell top or you will rip the ribbon cables that controls the blue light and the open shut button). Unhook the power / sata cable. Then unscrew the three side screws that is holding the drive. Take out the drive. Now use a paper clip and push it in the small hole of the front next above the power button to open the disc tray. Now unscrew the 4 screws on the bottom the drive. Now pop off the front face. Now you should be able to left out he inner parts. Now you can clean the lasers.

Good point OneRay; I’ve got no problem disassembling stuff but if I can warranty it I’ll do it. I won’t have voided my warranty with flashing the firmware will I?
