Hello! I just found another BDR-XS07UHD drive that I want to use as a backup. My concern is that the seller says that it has the newer firmware on it.

Will that be a problem or should it work with MakeMKV out of the box?

If the drive officially supports UHD - and BDR-XS07UHD does - then MakeMKV should support it too. AFAIK the only remaining problem with Pioneer drives is that we cannot (yet?) cross-flash recent non-UHD units.

The drive doesn't need to be crossflashed if it is UHD compatible and with firmware newer than Dec.2022.You are OK.

Hi,

I'm finally getting around to UHD 4K disks. I believe the drive I have is compatible (Verbatim with a Pioneer drive in it). The UHD disc is seen in MakeMKV however when I click on the disc, it tries to use direct disc access but fails with
Loaded content hash table, will verify integrity of M2TS files
The volume key is unknown for this disc - video can't be decrypted
Failed to open disc
So I'm wondering whether it's the disc or the player? (I've only bought the one disc to try). The player rips BR discs fine and using MakeMKV on Linux using the Flatpak version. My drive info is below and I haven't flashed it as yet (I removed the serial number from the listing)
Drive Information
OS device name: /dev/sr0
Current profile: BD-ROM
Manufacturer: PIONEER
Product: BD-RW BDR-UD04
Revision: 1.14
Firmware date: 2020-06-15
Bus encryption flags: 1B
Highest AACS version: 76

LibreDrive Information
Status: Enabled
Drive platform: RS8A10
Firmware name: PIONEER BDR-US04
Firmware type: Original (unpatched)
Firmware version: 1.14
DVD all regions: Yes
BD raw data read: Yes
BD raw metadata read: Yes
Unrestricted read speed: Yes

Any help would be appreciated

The drive is fine. Nothing needs to be done. You can start by cleaning the UHD disc. About 90% of the time, UHD discs require cleaning as they often have an invisible layer of film on them from the manufacturing process. Give it a good clean then insert the disc and let the OS initialise it and then once you can see it in explorer you can then open the MakeMKV application.

Also, ensure MakeMKV has internet access (and nothing is geo-blocking it as it is downloaded from Russia) as it needs to download the HK (hashed keys) database to be able to rip UHD discs as well as blu-ray discs with AACS v82.
Cheers :D

For the first time, I tried an UHD disc in the drive below:-
Drive Information
OS device name: T:
Manufacturer: PIONEER
Product: BD-RW BDR-XD05
Revision: 1.21
Serial number: ----------------
Firmware date: 2014-04-02
Bus encryption flags: 1B
Highest AACS version: 82

LibreDrive Information
Status: Enabled
Drive platform: RS8231
Firmware name: PIONEER BDR-XD05
Firmware type: Original (unpatched)
Firmware version: 1.21
DVD all regions: Yes
BD raw data read: Yes
BD raw metadata read: Yes
Unrestricted read speed: Yes

The drive wouldn't read the disc, but not in a bad way. Having read a lot of posts in this forum, who do I contact to enable UHD disks please.
