Just like with MakeMKV, if handbrake is actually CRASHING, make sure your support request on handbrake.fr includes the event view entries for the crash.
Or try their nightly build - if you're still using the handbrake release version, they're getting close to releasing a new one, with LOTS of fixes.

Resurrecting this old thread because I just had this error and figured out my cause. The movie I was trying to rip was Once Upon A Crime... What it was doing was creating the folder with that name "Once Upon A Crime..." and Windows was trunkating it to "Once Upon A Crime" so MakeMKV was erroring due to the "..." being dropped by Windows for the folder name. Removing the periods from the output folder resolved it
