Ken Burns JAZZ (2001) Disk 3

Post by psycoperl »

Dear All

Hope that you had a happy and healthy 2025.

I was encoding Disk 3 of the Ken Burns JAZZ Documentary as a MKV file and got the following. I tried this multiple times and without any success. Disks 1 & 2 encoded without issue. Any guidance would be appreciated.

Saving 1 titles into directory /Users/gmh/Movies/JAZZ (2001)
AV synchronization issues were found in file '/Users/gmh/Movies/JAZZ (2001)/JAZZ (2001) S01E03.mkv' (title #1)
AV sync issue in stream 0 at 0:39:18.556 : video frame timecode differs by +66.733ms
AV sync issue in stream 0 at 1:06:41.931 : video stream has 2 frames with invalid timecodes
Failed to save title 0 to file /Users/gmh/Movies/JAZZ (2001)/JAZZ (2001) S01E03.mkv
0 titles saved, 1 failed

To provide additional context, I tried this using my Apple SuperDrive and a BluRay Player on my MacBook Pro (M4 Pro)

I don't think I've seen an error like that before. Are you trying to create .mkv files directly from the optical disc or from a backup?

You could try using MakeMKV to create a decrypted backup of the disc (click the icon of the yellow folder with the green arrow on MakeMKV's first screen). For a DVD that'll make a .iso file (assuming the optical drive can correctly read the disc all the way through).

You can then open that file with MakeMKV again to try to create .mkv files. If that doesn't work, you should be able to use MKVToolNix GUI to open the .iso file and try to create .mkv files that way.

Separating the reading of the disc from interpreting the structure and content of the disc sometimes works. Sometimes disc structure that confuses MakeMKV works in MKVToolNix.

Working from the Backup:
MakeMKV v1.18.2 darwin(arm64-release) started
Optical drive "DVD+R-DL HL-DT-ST DVDRW GX40N RQ00 KW9D82E4542d" opened in OS access mode.
Backing up disc into folder "/Users/gmh/Movies/backup/JAZZ_03.iso"
Backup done
Using direct disc access mode
Title #1 was added (67 cell(s), 1:49:35)
Title #2 was added (1 cell(s), 0:00:10)
Title #4 has length of 7 seconds which is less than minimum title length of 10 seconds and was therefore skipped
Operation successfully completed
Saving 1 titles into directory /Users/gmh/Movies/JAZZ (2001)
AV synchronization issues were found in file '/Users/gmh/Movies/JAZZ (2001)/JAZZ (2001) S01E03.mkv' (title #1)
AV sync issue in stream 0 at 0:39:18.556 : video frame timecode differs by +66.733ms

Following Up on: Ken Burns JAZZ (2001) Disk 3

Hi All -
I borrowed a copy of this disk from a colleague who also had it and tried both from the disk and the ISO back up and still got the same error messages.

Using direct disc access mode
Title #1 was added (67 cell(s), 1:49:35)
Title #2 was added (1 cell(s), 0:00:10)
Title #4 has length of 7 seconds which is less than minimum title length of 10 seconds and was therefore skipped
Operation successfully completed
Saving 1 titles into directory /Users/gmh/Movies/JAZZ (2001)
AV synchronization issues were found in file '/Users/gmh/Movies/JAZZ (2001)/JAZZ (2001) S01E03 Our Language.mkv' (title #1)
AV sync issue in stream 0 at 0:39:18.556 : video frame timecode differs by +66.733ms
AV sync issue in stream 0 at 1:06:41.931 : video stream has 2 frames with invalid timecodes
Failed to save title 0 to file /Users/gmh/Movies/JAZZ (2001)/JAZZ (2001) S01E03 Our Language.mkv
0 titles saved, 1 failed

Are there any suggestions on what to do? This is part of a 10 dvd documentary.

I had the same problem (discs 3 and 10). I even sent the DVD collection back for an exchange, and the new one had the same issues.

The solution is very simple. By default MakeMKV checks all the subtitle files. For discs 3 and 10, just uncheck the last subtitle file (the one that says lossy) before ripping, and all is well. It's sad that the entire rip can be taken down by an errant subtitle file, but it's a very easy workaround.

Thanks so much to MightyMug2 on a similar thread a couple years ago (viewtopic.php?t=29159) which completely solved my problem.

Wow! Thank you so much for the guidance (and warning about Disk 10)

I wish that MakeMKV gave a little clue as to why it failed so that we could have figured it out.
