Something is missing, but not sure what - plz help!

Post by Feral Moose »

Been using MakeMKV for years under Windows. Recently switched to Linux (Bazzite) and I'm still learning to use it correctly.

The issue I'm having is, after installing MakeMKV from a Flatpak, the program runs, seemingly without issue (there's no error message), but it posts the following in the log and simply won't do anything else:

MakeMKV v1.18.2 linux(x64-release) started
The program can't find any usable optical drives.

The last line is not unexpected as there are no optical drives in my system. When I try to open an index.bdmv (as I've done many times in Windows) nothing happens. I assume I'm missing a library, or something, but I don't know which, or how to install it. I could use a little hand-holding, if some kind soul could walk me through it.

Thanks!

I don't use the Flatpak version but it could be a permissions issue with which drives/paths the flatpak app is able to see...that is something that I've experienced with other flatpak apps in the past at least. You could try using Flatseal (https://flathub.org/en/apps/com.github.tchx84.Flatseal) to edit the permissions for the app.

1.18.3 has been released, and this remains an issue. Never had a problem with MakeMKV under Windows. That it is an issue under Linux is almost certainly due to my unfamiliarity with the OS, but I'll be damned if I can find the fix for this.

Is there a way to disable the search for optical drives? Why would the program A) care if I have one, or B) fail to load the contents of the blu-ray disc from the index.bdmv file just because it failed to find a BD drive? This really seems like a code difference between the Windows and Linux versions.

No, but it is a difference between running in containers and on host. Flatpack is a jail/container, similar to Docker, Podman, Snap, AppImage, Kubernetes or any others. This particular issues sounds like a QT/GUI problem within the container but, I'd try a different container first. I suggest Docker or in your case also Podman.

Sadly I doubt you can easily install it on the host given how Bazzite works, so you might be trapped in container land. That said, I'm not sure why you'd be doing this on Bazzite to begin with given it's target application, but of course I understand that the user having more options is better no matter the OS.
