I flashed the driver with Terminal (macOS) successfully but the firmware didn’t update. Doh, I have a newer version (1.18.2) makeMKV.
Any idea when I can flash it? No rush.

You can flash it now, even with current MakeMKV - just gotta get the command line correct... And no disc in the drive during flash. Then power cycle (remove all connections to USB drive) after flash.

"enc" refers to the command line option for encryption. It's required if the drive has encrypted firmware on it. This is not specific to macOS.

You could also use UTM or a trial version of Parallels, install an unlicensed Windows (Microsoft allows this for so many days) & flash using the SDFtool.exe, on macOS.

This firmware works for me & 4K/UHD discs.

Note that I flashed "DE_LG_BU40N_1.03_MK.bin" using the SDFtool.exe in a Windows 11 VM (see my previous reply).

It's the same firmware. He just used the one in the original MakeMKV firmware pack. Mine are named better for easier reading as it's much easier to read DE_LG_BU40N_1.03_MK than HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_BU40N-1.03-NM00000-211810241934

I've never heard of country/source of the drive mattering for firmware.

What is the Mfg/model of the USB drive you purchased, as sold retail? What was on the box? Are you sure it was a BU40N drive internally?

Do you have 2 x USB or 1 x USB + 1 x power connections to the drive? 4K/UHD require more power than audio/DVD/Blu-Ray. Single USB ports/connections typically cannot supply enough power to a drive for 4K/UHD.

The Amazon link is an over-priced slim optical drive sized case for a SATA HD/SSD - look at the pictures from the 7th one on.

It will not hold a slim-line optical drive.

My friend has the 43888 and he said he could rip 4K with one usb cable.
I bought 43888, hoping it would Pioneer but I lost the lottery-BU40N.

Yes, that is the same. It should include both the 9.5mm drive enclsoure and also a HDD rack to fit in a 9.5mm drive bay.
