Im just about to order one of these from Amazon - advertised as Asus BW-16D1X-U
Am I doing the right thing?
Guessing everyones managed to flash with Libre drive firmware from MartyMcNuts pack.

Some of these contain LG drives, others Pioneer drives. It's just luck of the draw if you get a Pioneer drive inside! If it's a LG, yes, you can flash it yourself with the available tools. If it's a Pioneer you will need the non-public tool and firmware.
