WH14NS40 svc NS40, from 2024 ??

Post by xwmkf »

I just received this drive from ebay, from a US seller. (Note: If I had known it was an svc NS40 I would not have ordered it).

But an svc NS40, manufactured in 2024 -- does that make sense? I thought they changed from svc NS40 to NS50 in 2015.

Looking in more detail at photos in ebay I'm finding lots of images of WH14NS40 drive with a label that says SVC ns40 and a 2020+ date, which make me wonder even more.

Is there some china factory that kept making this design even after 2015? Or, are there people making fake NS40 labels that use modern dates? (And, if you're going to fake a label, why not fake it to say NS50?)

Also I note on the label, the two dates don't agree ("Manufactured: February 2024" but also "2024 08 18") but I don't know if that's abnormal or not.

The other pattern that starts to emerge from looking at drive photos in listings is that it seems like the "super multi" logo was used on the NS40 drives and the "M DISC" logo was used on the NS50 drives, but I don't know if that's a true correlation or not.

I'm trying to gather more info about this before I decide what to do with the drive (keep it, or try to raise an issue with the seller, etc). If you have any thoughts I'd love to hear them.

The drive is shrink wrapped and I haven't wanted to remove that until I decide what I'm going to do. But I'm very much assuming it'll show up as MT1939 and not MT1959.

I tried to add photo attachments, but it didn't seem to work. Trying links instead:

Lots of these fakes are coming from China. They are the older pre 2016 MT1939 drives with SVC NS40 with a new sticker slapped on them.
Cheers :D

Thanks Marty.

Is there a good reference for the NS40 not being made after 2015 that I can point to?

And so for legitimate LG drives:
  • is it the case that both dates on the label match?
  • and am I correct in thinking that the "super multi" on the tray correlates with the NS40 era and the "M DISC" with the NS50 era?

As far as I am aware, LG still manufacture most of their models (WH14NS40, WH16NS40, BH16NS55) but not the WH16NS60 which ceased poduction about 3 years ago.

If you do a bit of searching you will find some images of the old and new but yeah, basically the drive tray faceplate is difference and the top of the metal shell is different. The newer one's have four little indents not the big circle one like on your drive.
