Resurrecting WH14NS40

Post by vasir13 »

Good day,

Purchased a WH14NS40 from Ebay. Of course it turned out to be a fake one. This drive is a rebranded 16NS40 with board version of 2011-11-17 JB7.
Now the jerks at EBay are using a plastic plate that covers the board revision and “warranty” tapes on all 4 screws on the back plate. So in order to find out the board revision, one needs to open the drive to pull the fake plastic plate and finally view the board revision. Doing so will “invalidate” the so called warranty.
Anyways I have included 2 pictures that hopefully can help someone in the future detecting fake drives. On the board sticker is advertised as a 2017 drive but then flashing a pre 2015 drive will not be successful. The drive is a zombie, meaning that the hardware is detected by the OS but cannot read any DVD or BL discs.
Tried to follow few links makemkv links such as

viewtopic.php?t=19748
and
viewtopic.php?t=26471

I tried to follow the hexedit path but directions are very vague.
I am booting using the WinPE path, the drive is responsive but can not use the EEPROM_Data_Mover since it is giving me invalid file name error or some other errors.
Is there a better direction on how to use hexedit (meaning address locations to be changed).
I do not want to junk this drive but already wasted many hours trying to resurrect it.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

It was sold as new. Got my money refunded but still a pain.

Tried that already, does not work for me for some reason. Thus asking about manual editing of the firmware.
