LG WH16NS60 V1.00 need V1.02MK

Post by smileyguy »

I have LG WH16NS60 V1.00 April 2023. Libre drive enabled out of box. Any users recommend flashing to version 1.02MK?

Nope, should be fine. Leave it as is unless you have some issues.
Cheers :D

I received a second WH16NS60 with v1.03 and Libre drive enabled. It has v1.00 April 2023 on the label, same as the first The serial number is lower and no ULTRAHD logo on the second drive. I have not flashed the drive but made a backup of the firmware with SDFTool read function. My first drive with firmware v1.00 created a .bin file but the second drive read function created a .tar file with multiple folders etc. Is the .tar file a backup of the firmware that can be flashed back to the drive or are .bin files the only writeable backup file? Not sure if the second drive has been flashed previously with 1.02MK and shows v1.03 with Libre drive enabled status. I also wonder if this is a WH16NS60 or a non UHD drive with friendly firmware and a fake label.

I found a MK custom firmware that is for the WH16NS60 v1.03 which I believe was flashed to the drive before I purchased it.
I though I was making a backup of the firmware but the .tar files are only calibration files. Both drive firmware's are not encrypted, but I can only read v1.00 and get a .bin file. Should the v1.03 be flashed to the recommended 1.02MK?

Just leave it as is. When you eventually start having read issues, then flash it to 1.02-MK.

Thank you so much MartyMcNuts! I was so fixated on flashing my drive’s firmware that I didn’t even stop to think if I actually needed to. Thank goodness for this forum!

Would be awesome if you could confirm whether that’s really necessary. Here’s my drive info:

Code: Select all

Drive Information
OS device name: /dev/sr0
Manufacturer: HL-DT-ST
Product: BD-RE BH16NS55
Revision: 1.02
Serial number: SIK9EGAA9133
Firmware date: 2115-12-11 14:40
Bus encryption flags: 17

LibreDrive Information
Status: Enabled
Drive platform: MT1959
Firmware type: Original (unpatched)
Firmware version: 1.02
DVD all regions: Yes
BD raw data read: Yes
BD raw metadata read: Yes
Unrestricted read speed: Yes
The firmware date is a bit weird, isn’t it?

Thank you!

Yeah, MakeMKV is a bit strange with the firmware dates. Always shows a 1 where the 0 would be.

Your drive is already UHD rip capable as is but does have the sleep bug. Normally you'd insert a UHD disc then start ripping once it is initialized so this really isn't an issue but if you insert a UHD disc then do nothing for a few minutes, when you then try to rip it, it'll start making horrible seeking noises. If you do this, just open/close the tray and you're all good.

I still have my original BH16NS55 from 2017 that is on firmware v1.02. I don't see any need to change it. I used it for the first couple of years until I got my Pioneer drives, now it's sitting in storage.

So, the difference between your current firmware and flashing to WH16NS60 1.00 (or WH16NS60 1.02-MK)

1. WH16NS60 1.00 reads faster than NS55 firmware (about 10-15% faster) and removes the sleep bug. Is still compatible with all popular ripping software for all disc types.

2. WH16NS60 1.02-MK reads faster than NS55 firmware (about 10-15% faster) and removes the sleep bug. For UHD discs, it only works with MakeMKV (and Xreveal).
Cheers :D
