Preferences explained somewhere?

Post by ChaosEnergy »

Hey

Today I got my verbatim drive, sadly with a bu40n not the pioneer variant, i falshed it
and now i want to start...

BUT...

before i start, i like to dig through the settings and expert mode and so on

Some parts are self explanation, but also some parts in preference menu are not

Is there anywhere a palce where all those settings are explained in detail, and when to use what
Just want to set the best options before i start

If it was in FAQ, this website part throws errors

You can find the FAQ via the Internet Archive's Wayback machine, but I don't think it had a comprehensive explanation of every item in the preferences.

Some stuff is explained in various posts around the forum. Changing names with Expert mode enabled

If searching the forum doesn't provide an answer, you could just ask.

when will i use a different profile than default
AAC,
FLAC (i saw it converts in this case the audio)
WDTV

Seems doing a full back is a better way to start, as i often dont know which is the right movie and i also like to keep the specials
ruipping off some languages would be fine,
sadly i cant extend the default language to two languages, cause i like to keep English and my local Language,
I dont find a way, to activate all or no subtitles, or audio with one click, is it really not possible?

and a very interesting question which could save me lot of time and effort

is there a way to play the makemkv backup folder (or maybe an iso) on firetv AND Samsung tv
i found kodi for mobile phone and somehow on a firetv, without a gallery , but no for samsung
is there some kind of mediaserver or at least aone player for all the plattforms?

The only profile I use besides the default is FLAC. FLAC audio helps me overcome some peculiarities of my local setup. For the most part, I think most people use the default profile most of the time.

My general usage pattern is first make a decrypted backup of a disc. Then I open that backup and create .mkv files from it. I too rip the 'extras' on a disc.

I don't have any default language chosen. I just pick every time.

In the tree of tracks on the left of the screen you can right-click and pick 'unselect all'. This isn't exactly what you asked for, but it is often faster to check what you want to keep than it is to uncheck what you don't want.

I don't have a FireTV or a Samsung TV. I do, however, use Plex. I use an old Mac mini with a big external hard drive to run the Plex server. There's a Plex client for almost everything. This setup works pretty well for me and is relatively popular.
If there isn't a Plex client for your Samsung TV, you could always get a Fire TV Stick or a Google Chromecast or an Apple TV or whatever to run the Plex client for any TV you can't get a native Plex client app for.

Plex uses Java's JRE now?

In the past, Samsung Smart TV's didn't support the Plex app very well, some did, some didn't. But as far as I know if you want BD menu support you'll need something like Kodi or VLC with the appropriate plugin and JRE installed. You could spend a lot of money on a UGOOS AM6B Plus, install CoreELEC-NG on it, then inside Kodi install the JRE and BD plugin, although I'd wait for a holiday sale because the price of those just keeps rising and rising.

Ah, I missed that the OP wanted to play the backup folder. I wrongly assumed we were just talking about .mkv files. I don't think Plex will play them; certainly that's not how I use it.

AAC and FLAC profiles compress the audio, and can slow things down if copying directly from disc. I also personally wouldn't recommend them for non-stereo sources, due to various reasons.
WDTV profile applies lossless zlib compression to the subtitle tracks. MKVToolNix does this by default, so if you remux after ripping, you don't need to deal with this.

This is possible by manually setting advanced selection rules.

Thanks for all the answers and suggestions

@SirYodaJedi
Manual you can set ONE default language, but not TWO
As a non native english speaker I surely like to get my own language, but often you only get best Audiotrack, if you chose English
Thats why I would like to set 2 default languages
