With all of the flashing, now my UHD won't play any discs

Post by ZackyDog »

With all of the flashing I've done, now my UHD won't play any DVDs, Blu-rays or 4k Blu-rays.

I got a used UHD BU40N (internal slim drive) today. At one time, it could play blu-ray discs, but now it won't play any discs.

I was trying to flash it, using the SDFtool Flasher and this bin file: HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_BU40N-1.03-NM00000-211810241934.

Does anyone have any ideas how I can fix this?

Thanks for stopping by.

I just tried Marty McNuts firmware (BU40N 1.03-MK) and that didn't work.

Try power cycling the drive. And post your current drive info.

@dcoke22

I did power cycle it. I know the unit can eject and spin the discs, but won't play anything (e.g. DVD, Blu-ray, CD, etc.)

ATA HL-DT-ST BD-RE BU40N
Model: BU40N (ANCK2N0).

How is the drive connected to the PC? If not using an enclosure, you must provide the drive with AC power.

On the back of the BU40N, there's a mini sata port (7 + 6 pin) which is connected to the motherboard of my slimfit HP PC, which is plugged into an electrical outlet in the wall of my home.

Ok, so the PC case has a 9.5mm optical drive slot. Are you sure you have connected both sata and power cables to the drive? Or is it a combined 13 pin data/power cable?

The sata and power cables are separate and not combined; they are connected to the drive. I'll double-check to see that the connection is secure/solid.

I know this seems strange, but could I get an adapter like this (13 pin sata to usb) and use 2 of my usb 3.0 inputs on my PC?

No, these don't work. I've tried one of those before. The adapter itself needs AC power.

I can confirm that both of these SATA to USB powered adapters work with the mini sata adapter.

I am deducing that the power supply from my Slimfit HP isn't sufficient for my internal UHD drive(?) Strange because my external lost/stolen Archgon UHD drive worked fine when I connected it to 2 of my USB 3.0 ports.

Most of these cheap adapters only support HDDs and not optical drives. Not a power issue. Get one of those Marty recommended.

I have an adapter like Marty suggested (unfortunately, none of the ones that he suggested are in stock):

But I still can't connect the two.

From what Marty said, there is a power issue and I should use direct AC power (e,g, not via my PC's power supply).

Hey, I think we are having the same issue. Although mine says it is still original(unpatched) even after flashing many times with sdf and the command line. I also have an HP pc (HP Elitedesk 800 G3) so maybe it is an issue with hp? How can you be sure it is a power issue?

That unitek one should be fine. Just add a sata to mini sata adaptor and you should be good. I linked to it in my previous post.
