I currently have an Asus BW-16D1HT drive that is Libredrive compatible; however, it has issues ripping even non-UHD bluray discs that are used or not in pristine condition. It can rip the one UHD disc I have, but that is in brand new condition.
So, is it worth it to get a Pioneer drive? It seems like they have shot up in price over the past couple of days, with the BDR-212V at around 150 dollars. I'm concerned with its ability to rip non-UHD blurays that are in used condition.
Does anyone have both the BW-16D1HT and a Pioneer drive? Has the Pioneer been able to rip a disc that the Asus drive can't? Thanks for any info.

You've got to hurry. Yes. They are better readers and writers. And ASUS / LG's tend to die early.

So what Pioneer drive would you recommend of the ones that are still available? I'm not concerned about UHD compatibility right now since apparently all Pioneer drives should work in the future. An external model (like the BDR-XS07S) is tempting for the portability but I don't know how they are for longevity. There's also one that's top loading which might last longer. I can use a 5.25 internal drive as well but not sure what would be best for that size either.

Most are now hard to get. Depends on your region. Production has stopped. Seller Asmcom is on vacation and he has the largest stock that will be soon gone. You can maybe still find a Vinpower 212V on Newegg or Amazon. It needs to be flashed. Post when you have it.

Is that still the best option even if I'm not concerned with UHD compatibility right now? Supposedly all Pioneer drives will be compatible in the future.

Do the Vinpower drives have any special branding or labels? I see there is one on Amazon that is listed under the Vinpower store but is sold by a 3rd party and looks like a normal Pioneer drive.
