BTW: MPC-HC on windows have been able to decode DV for some time using LAV filters and MPC Video Renderer. What is the take on this? (especially when using an external display)

Also LAV filters 0.8 released recently claims to support DV metadata natively (but it appears broken for now, based on the latest MPC-HC nightly which includes LAV 0.8 )

I usually run dovi_scripts (mostly for transferring CMV 4.0 from the web to the Blu-ray version) on the external HDD connected to my PC. Afterward, I unplug it from the PC and plug it into the Ugoos to watch movies. To avoid these plug/unplug steps, I'm thinking about running dovi_scripts on the external HDD connected to the Ugoos via an SMB share from my PC. Is this advisable? I tried it this morning, and it seems quite a bit slower than on the PC.

it will be limited by the ugoos network(1gbps) speed so yeah, it will be much slower than a PC with a SSD or nvme drive.

Yeah, SMB seems to be limited to 30MB/s in both directions (even though it does go higher, seemingly by random, from time to time) You can try NFS for faster network speeds, but it is complicated to set up and not super stable either. I just download stuff directly to the box (using midnight commander) or move my disks to a pc if i need to move huge volumes.

Sorry I meant the external hdd was connected to the ugoos via usb, so dovi_scripts was running on the ugoos (I only operated it from my pc via smb share), so network speed is not relevant here, correct? The ugoos is probably not capable enough to run dovi_scripts, that's why the process took much longer?

Anyway I bought a ugreen usb 3.0 switch, so now I can share the external hdd between my pc and the ugoos. So switch to pc connection when I run dovi scripts, and switch to ugoos connection when I watch movies - just need to press one button to switch, no more plugging/unplugging. So far so good. I can share other devices like mouse and keyboard too. Operating the ugoos with mouse and keyboard feels way better than the remote.
This method is probably cheaper than buying a brand new router that can handle high bitrate 4k hdr plex streaming from my pc to the ugoos, and I don't need to turn the pc on everytime I watch on the ugoos.

Well then I guess in your case a powerful router to handle 4k hdr streaming is the way to go.

According to my calculations:

HDR10 (10-bit): Approximately 1.07 billion colors,
Profile 5 Dolby Vision / IPTPQc2 (equivalent to 11.5-bit): Approximately 22.4 billion colors,
Profile 7 Dolby Vision (FEL, 12-bit): Approximately 68.7 billion colors.

Is this correct?

I can't find a definite source saying Profile 5 can display X amount of colours, so I had to do some calculations based on what we do know (HDR10 and Profile 7 FEL).

A lot of people seem to think P8 + RPU (purely based on BD bit rate, but 4K WEB-DLs look practically the same as 4K BD releases these days, bit rate doesn't really mean anything anymore with the current highly efficient WEB-DLs, not to mention the potential BL + RPU brightness mismatch problems) is better than P5 RPU, but the numbers don't lie.

Would you recommend generating DV? Why/Why not?

The whole movie is under 175nits, it would be a waste of time and wouldn't make any difference unless you have a low-nit projector.
