Best software to create ISO file from full disk backup

Post by Roscoe62 »

Hi,
First off, I apologize if I've created this post in the wrong sub-forum. Please feel free to move it to a more appropriate place if necessary.

I would like to change the way I use MakeMKV. I'd first like to do a full-disk backup, then use the full-disk backup to create an ISO file. Once the full-disk ISO file is created, I will then MOUNT the disk, and use MakeMKV to create the movie-only file I'll use for regular movie watching (with all the desired audio & sub-title options pre-selected), and archive the ISO file on my server. If I ever need special features, or alternate commentaries, I can always retrieve them from the ISO file - without having to re-rip the physical disk again.

Now, I tried to use "Image Burn" to create the ISO files. It does this successfully, BUT it removes my option to MOUNT the ISO file from my right-click menu. I'm using Windows 11. That's a FAIL.

I then installed the Windows OSCDIMG file, as part of their Assessment and Deployment Kit, but when I created the ISO file, the main movie file within the disk was made to be a fraction of its actual size. Absolutely a FAIL!

Can anyone suggest a software application I can use for this very specific task? I.e. :
1) It must make an accurate ISO file from a MakeMKV full-disk backup
2) It must still leave me with the option of MOUNTING an ISO file, if needed

I don't mind paying for software to do this task - it just needs to be able to meet the above 2 criteria.
I'm grateful for any suggestions!

I suggest you use Imgburn and you select just BDMV and CERTIFICATE to create the ISO. Instead of loading the ISO with Windows install the free VirtualcloneDrive from Elby and mount it with that program.

Hi,
I thought I should come back to this thread. I re-installed Image Burn, and also installed Virtual CloneDrive to handle mounting the ISO files as you suggested. It worked a treat! :-)

Thanks for your suggestion - problem solved!

... to handle mounting the ISO...
If you're going to mount it, use a .zip and not a .iso file and mount that. If you must have a drive letter you can mount the .zip with "subst". If it has to be a symlink I *think* you can use "mklink" prior to that. I can't test this, but as far as I know you could mount a NFS share with "mount", symlink it with mklink and associate a letter with subst, of course you should be able to do this without a symlink or using a NFS mount, so only "subst" could be used (if no driver letter is desired).

FWIW, many years ago on Windows 7 I had to use "mount" and "mklink" to get Adobe products to read from NFS network directories (SMB shares also worked for Adobe with mklink).
