Problematic home videos

Post by romulox2000 »

(did some searching, but come up empty)

Hi,

I've got a home video of a vacation I took back in 2001 and authored it on DVD, with motion menus, in the same year. I have no idea what tool I used to author it back then.

The DVD plays fine in the Mac or in a dvd player, but makemkv does not recognize the disc. This is from the log file:

Code: Select all

Debug log started at Wed Jan 4 13:42:09 2012 , written by MakeMKV v1.7.0 darwin(x86-release)
Using 524544KB for read cache.
001005:0000 MakeMKV v1.7.0 darwin(x86-release) started
001004:0000 Debug logging enabled, log will be saved as /Users/xxxxxxxxx/MakeMKV_log.txt
002010:0000 Optical drive "DVD+R-DL HL-DT-ST DVDRW GS21N SA18" opened in OS access mode.
002015:0000 It's highly recommended to install DASPI kernel extension to improve performance.
002010:0000 Optical drive "BD-RE HL-DT-ST BD-RE BP06LU10 HL03" opened in OS access mode.
003007:0000 Using direct disc access mode
003025:0000 Title #0 has length of 15 seconds which is less than minimum title length of 120 seconds and was therefore skipped
003025:0000 Title #1 has length of 15 seconds which is less than minimum title length of 120 seconds and was therefore skipped

{exact error continues from Title #2 to Title #41}

003025:0000 Title #42 has length of 15 seconds which is less than minimum title length of 120 seconds and was therefore skipped
003025:0000 Title #43 has length of 15 seconds which is less than minimum title length of 120 seconds and was therefore skipped
005010:0000 Failed to open disc
In addition to the physical DVD, I also used RipIt to dump the entire disc, converted that to an ISO, and tried again - but got the same errors.

As I'm typing, I have another home video that's working just fine in makemkv. That was authored in 2003 and I'm sure I used something different to make this DVD; but, I have about 30 discs to go!!! I suspect I'll have other problematic DVDs.

Any ideas, or maybe tool (for a Mac) that can be used to convert old DVDs into something with a more modern standard - which can then be used into makemkv? Please note I have WinXP on vmware, so I'm open to use windows tools as well.

Handbrake will probably work - I just didn't feel like encoding anything.

Thanks!

Nevermind!

I'm new to boxee, and it seems they can read ISOs. This is my easiest solution for my problematic DVDs. makemkv is actually working great on the videos that were not authored with fancy menus and it's nice to have separate mkvs for each video segment.

thanks for reading.
