Do you people even realize that drives can be fixed when they age? I mean it will probably get to the point when there will be no more new drives anyway. And slim drives better than desktop ones? Perhaps for snapping your discs with that flimsy hub design they have.

They probably can be fixed, but I still think it doesn't hurt to have a spare. Also, I don't know what kind of repair my drive would need if it starts to have problems. Maybe it would be something as simple as needing a new elastic belt, or maybe a new laser or something that could be more difficult to fix, and I'm not sure there are a lot of people I could bring it to who'd know how to fix it.

And uh where do you think parts for drives that are no longer made come from?

Only for the most basic issues. The most concerning part is the blue laser since it, unlike a red burn laser, has a fixed life.

The laser and focusing is intrinsic into the optical pickup unit. The optical pickup unit for most (read all) drives will be surface-mount soldered to its ribbon cable, which effectively renders it so integrated into the whole mechanical head traversal unit that it effectively can only be replaced as a whole piece. That right there is 80% of the complexity of your drive.

So yes, if your tray eject belt goes, or tray's limit optical switch gets grease on it you can fix that. If you get dust on your laser, sure. Other than that, pray for its immortal soul as it traverses to that great drive bay in the sky.

You don't grease the belt it would slip

The rails and motor shaft you can use silicone paste it the safest and non reactive but really not needed for many years

Billy- are these motors brushless types? If not, something containing silicone is the worst you can use since it increases wear big time on motor brushes. Even if not applied directly the silicone will spread within the drive and will cause wear.

Petroleum based grease would be worse because it degrades plastic and has to come in direct contact with laser sled and and follower both as plastic

I am unsure if motors are brushless or brushed

I have only had the motor shaft out of the motor did not disassemble further than that on motor

Lithium based products have taken over these applications almost entirely.

I also suggest Lithium based grease just in case they use brushed motors.

I'm curious, what about the XS06 model is so different from the other drives that makes it one that won't be flashable?

from the factory pioneer uses clear lube likely silicone lithium grease is usually white

Hi all, new to Ripping and it's more so a question of the hardware and this is my first post here. Pls bear in mind that I'm currently located in Germany and will be using the drive with my M2 MBP.

Being where I am there was little choice of what external optical drive is available to be purchased and it was really only this Verbatim #43888 model (an older model) via Amazon.de that could be purchased.

Through this websites I learned that it came with either an LG or Pioneer drive inside the Verbatim housing. The drive arrived and it's an LG, came with native region code 1 (the US) and that it was likely destined for the US as the EU market likely predominately shipped with a Pioneer. I did read somewhere that folks from the US have used Amazon Germany to order, to ensure they received the Pioneer.

I could send it back and hope for the best to get the Pioneer in the Amazon sweep stakes.

To those in the know, the Pioneer is meant to be a LibreDrive, making it easier to use out of the box for ripping? I spoke to Verbatim EU today and they also put forward that Pioneer hasn't updated the Firmware for quite some time and back in 2022/2023 an update killed many capabilities. Tech support also mention they rather get more complaints for ripping with the Pioneer due to the Firmware update. Also I sporadically read a mention of on the make MKV forum. I did find a site with instructions of flashing Libre Firmware onto the LG I have.

As you can tell I'm a newcomer to this and still in a return window. To those familiar with this model and choice of internals, please weigh in if the Pioneer or the LG (I have) is the better option to go for and sorry this post got lengthy.

So we mostly do not need to grease anything inside these drives right - Thanks
