Sorry to resurrect a super old thread, but I wanted to clarify some of the back-and-forth around time stamps. For FOTR, the time stamps are fine as the audio cuts off when the screen goes black. But, for TT and ROTK, the earlier time stamps mentioned (not earlier in the thread, but earlier in the movie) don't take into account the audio (musical score). They simply call out when the screen goes black. The later time stamps take into account the audio. It's pretty clear Peter Jackson intended for there to be some black screen since the musical score continues. And splicing the two halves together with 1-2 seconds of black screen seems fine to me since the musical score continues and it honestly increases the drama of the cut. Did he do that because he knew it'd be on two discs? I have no idea, but it works.

Also sorry to resurrect a super old thread again, but based on your comment, I took a closer look at when exactly the audio ends at the end of each part 1 for the 4k release (by converting the mix to FLAC and then opening up the audio tracks in Audacity). Based on that, I set these to be the split times:

FOTR Disc 1: 6388.5s
FOTR Disc 2: 2s
TTT Disc 1: 6397.5s
TTT Disc 2: 2s
ROTK Disc 1: 7658.75s
ROTK Disc 2: 2s

Using these times (again for the 4k version release) minimizes the amount of black screen with no audio and doesn't introduce any flicker when the disc 2 halves start up (for me of course).
