Hi everyone,
I'm new to this world, and hoping to get started on my own Jelly/Plex server with rips of my old disc collection.
I'm looking to buy a drive for ripping UHD Blu-rays , Blu-rays and DVDs, with MakeMKV, and I could really use some help verifying if the following models are suitable.
I'm in Denmark, so availability is a bit limited. I’m unsure whether I should go with a full-size internal drive for my Unraid server or maybe a slim drive in a USB enclosure for use with my main PC.
I’ve found the following options that seem buyable here:
Full-size internal drives:
LG BH16NS55 – https://www.computersalg.dk/i/5071173/l ... -5-25-sort
ASUS BW-16D1HT – https://www.computersalg.dk/i/1093099/a ... -5-25-sort
ASUS BW-16D1H-U PRO (USB 3.0) – https://www.proshop.dk/Optiske-Drev-DVD ... rt/2515728
Slim drive (might put in USB enclosure):
LG BU40N – https://www.computersalg.dk/i/5116818/l ... h%C3%B8jde
If I end up using the drive in my Unraid server (Docker container), I plan to flash it using my main Windows PC before installing it in the server.
Do any of these drives look like good candidates for LibreDrive support and reliable ripping with MakeMKV?
Any advice is much appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

Re: Help verifying compatible drives for MakeMKV use (available in Denmark)
I've ordered this — which, by the way, wasn't one of the ones I linked to earlier:
Verbatim Ultra HD 4K - BDXL drive - SuperSpeed USB 3.1 Gen 1
Model: 43888
https://www.proshop.dk/Optiske-Drev-DVD ... rt/2968920
It was honestly hard to figure out what would work and what wouldn’t.
After some Googling, I decided to just buy something, instead of spending even more days trying to be 100% sure. This model should be fine — and it might even have a Pioneer drive inside. If it turns out to be an LG drive, I’ll consider returning it… but I might just keep it anyway.

Anyway, first step taken!

I think most Verbatim 43888 models are coming with a BU40N inside them these days. I haven't seen anyone else specifically posting about Denmark, but others in Europe and around the world have been getting BU40N drives. https://forum.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=37651

I've successfully ripped a DVD and a Blu-Ray without flashing - I haven't tried UHD yet.
I'm guesing nothing will happen if I try without flashing - I mean, I won't break anything for trying without flashing first, right ?

Your drive certificate will likely be revoked if you try a UHD discs without enabling LibreDrive.Dark_Helmet wrote: ↑Thu May 15, 2025 5:14 pmThanks MartyMartyMcNuts wrote: ↑Thu May 15, 2025 4:17 amDon't forget to flash it before attempting to rip UHD discs!Dark_Helmet wrote: ↑Wed May 14, 2025 5:24 pmI just got my Verbatim 43888 drive - It is a BU40N![]()
