Ripping "The Blue Lagoon" German BluRay Disc (Die Blaue Lagune) - 100+ Options in MakeMKV

Post by no_name22 »

Hello, first time poster, hoping to get some help.

I have been ripping UHD/BluRay discs for a few weeks now and have finally encountered a disc with playlist obfuscation and can't seem to figure it out. I have looked through all the different forums and sites to see if anyone has ripped this disc before but because it is the German release, I assume there's less posts about it and is harder to find.

On top of that, I have tried all sorts of different methods found on the forums here as well as reddit but can't seem to figure out which file is the correct one. Really hoping someone can help me narrow them down, or that someone has been in the same boat and knows which is the correct file.

If all else fails, I'll have to sift through over 100 different versions of the file to find the correct one lol. Also, I have a BluRay version of the film downloaded from a P2P site that I can compare this remux and its' segments to, but unfortunately this BluRay file does not have the same runtime as any of the available remux options.

Hope this is the correct place to ask this and hope this isn't a dumb question! Thankful for any and all help!

Check the segment maps and attached audio and subtitle tracks from each version. If they are identical you can rip just one and that's it.

If they differ only in the attached audio tracks, search for the one with the tracks you want.
Or if you want multiple or even all tracks make an decrypted disc backup and merge the segments with makemkv manually (should contain everything except chapters).

If the segment map is different, you have to make a full disc backup and check whats different between the different segments.
If the disc doesn't contain different versions of the movie (Theatrical vs Extended/Director's Cut etc.) it's most likely different Credits for different languages.
Use the preferred segments and merge them in the correct order with makemkv.

With the linked chapters feature it's also possible to create a file that works like seamless branching on Blu-rays with all different segments in one file.

Out of curiosity how would you do that?

The DVDCompare.net entry for The Blue Lagoon says the film is 104:46, even for the German version.

So you could throw out any that aren't that length.

If you make a decrypted backup of the disc (on the first screen of MakeMKV, the icon of the yellow folder with the green arrow), in the <backup>/BDMV/STREAM folder you'll find .m2ts files that correspond with the segment numbers listed in the segment map for each title. You can play these files with most players like VLC.

The GetMPLS tool might help. Or the Process Monitor method might work too.

With the linked chapters feature it's also possible to create a file that works like seamless branching on Blu-rays with all different segments in one file.
And this too… how would you do that?

The first is easy:
  • open MKVToolNix-GUI
  • select multiplexer (top entry in the left toolbar, standard selection)
  • drag and drop the first file into the window
  • drag and drop all segments in the correct order and select "append to existing source file" (4th option)
  • if all segemnts are added set metadata and output path
  • start multiplexing
linked chapters:
In the chapter editor of MKVToolNix-GUI you can mark an Entry as Default, Hidden and Ordered.
Each Chapter can also be marked as hidden.
If an Entry is marked as ordered, the chapters are played exactly in the order and duration as defined.
So if all extra segments are added at the end of the movie you just have to make different Editions where you swap the played part.
Based on how many different variants a segment has, it can be a lot of work to create it, especially if you want to integrate the original Chapters from the Blu-ray.
For metadata like language and names for the different Editions a separate xml has to be integrated when muxing the file.

In VLC you can encounter small jumps when the movie jumps from a later segment to an earlier one. MPC-HC has no such problems.
