Re: Can't rip any Blu-ray discs

I'm having a similar problem, perhaps the same problem, with MakeMKV 1.7.0 on Mac OS X 10.6.8.

I have an ASUS SBC-06D1S-U A301. The Blu-Rays I'm using are US region commercial Blu-Rays.

I originally tried MakeMKV 1.6.16 about 2-3 weeks ago. I backed up "Toy Story" (with decryption) to my HD. MakeMKV reports the disc encryption as AACS v15. Then later I created an MKV from the backed up image.

Today I upgraded to MakeMKV 1.7.0. Then I tried creating an MKV directly from the Toy Story 2 Blu Ray Disc. MakeMKV reports the disc encryption as AACS v16. This fails with the "The volume key is unknown for this disc - video can't be decrypted" error. I tried creating a backup from the disc to repeat the procedure I'd used with Toy Story. This also failed. Then I tried both procedures with Toy Story (which had worked for me previously with MakeMKV 1.6.16). This also doesn't work.

Then I tried MakeMKV 1.6.16 again. Creating an MKV from the Blu-Ray failed in the same way. However, the backup of Toy Story 2 worked properly in MakeMKV 1.6.16. Then, using the decrypted backup, I'm able to open the image and create an MKV.

Before reverting to 1.6.16, I tried several things seen from other threads. I tried reinstalling the DASPI driver, unpowering & repowering the external USB BD drive, rebooting the computer, etc. Nothing seemed to help.

I've created MKV's from several DVD's, but the only 2 blu rays I've tried are Toy Story and Toy Story 2.

Do you have any thoughts on what the problem might be? Is there any more information I could provide to help with this?

Thanks.

I believe I may have solved my problem for now.

I had been trying to make the MKV off of the Blu-Ray by selecting the "Open Video Files" icon and selecting a file on the Blu-Ray (such as BDMV/index.bdmv). This would consistently lead to the "The volume key is unknown for this disc - video can't be decrypted" errors.

However, if I go to the "File" menu, then choose "Open Disc" and choose my drive, everything works, on both 1.6.16 and 1.7.0.

It remains a mystery though why there is a difference in the disc backup behaviour between 1.6.16 and 1.7.0.

Nevertheless, it seems to be important to "Open Disc" rather than to open a file on the disc in both versions.

Annoyingly enough, my BD drive can't seem to detect Bluray discs now! The easiest solution that I found to fix it would be to get a cleaning disc, but I'm not sure about that...

Darn thing can still do DVDs and CDs, and the computer knows a disc has been inserted when I put a BD in, but after scanning for a few seconds, it just indicates that there is not a disc in the drive! :x
