Will VLC play a makemkv backup folder?

#1 Post by christopher2222 » Mon Apr 21, 2025 3:22 pm

I've tried many things to try to get VLC to play from the backup folder. No joy. I'm using VLC 3.0.16

Has anyone been able to get VLC to play from the bluray backups?

I can get MPC-BE x64 to play the index.bdmv no problem. What do others use?

The only other option to use VLC is to run the backup in makemkv and create the mkv from the backup. Of course you're doubling the space, then if there's an extended version, it's triple the space - if that's the route one wants to take.

You should be able to play the disc in VLC, assuming you installed the correct java, aacs and libbdplus versions.

Use either "open directory" and choose the BDMV folder or "open disc", choose Blu-ray and then the parent folder, containing BDMV, CERTIFICATE and MAKEMKV folders.

Yes the disc can be played. But VLC can't seem to play from the backup folder?

Try selecting "Open Disc" to play the backup folder?

Thanks that works. Selecting the backup folder as the disc makes it work, the one thing I didn't try.
Thanks again.

A couple of caveats I will note here.
Opening disc defaults to DVD so make sure Bluray is selected.

Also there is a Starting Position title value to select. If it's a disc of a season of episodes, you manually have to select them individually VLC will only play one at a time. It's a bit of a shot in the dark.

Also some episodes have different angles to denote original episode vs enhanced episodes like Star Trek the original series.

MPC-BE is a little better in respect to being able to pick the episodes from the toolbar menu. Whereas VLC your stuck randomly loading in each disc file individually. However both players fail to separate out the original un-enhanced episode.

Even the playlist (.mpls) files folder doesn't have the proper older .m2ts files. So the only way I've discovered in this case is to run makemkv on the index.bdmv backup and make the mkv file. It shows the correct segment map - same playlist different segment map which I can't figure out how it selects.

VLC struggles with full Blu-ray backups; most people use MPC-BE, MPC-HC, or play through MakeMKV instead since VLC doesn’t reliably handle BDMV folders.

VLC can open index.bdmv, but support is unreliable. MPC-BE handles Blu-ray backups much better. Converting with MakeMKV is the most stable option, though it does take more space.

I've never had an issue with bdmv folders in vlc. I've had problems with java in blurays, but never with a bluray that doesn't use java. and this is well known as the java support in libbluray is very incomplete. good enough for many uses, but no where near perfect (and with development on it basically non existent)
