Do i need to update my old BH16NS40 drive to play/backup this disc?
Do i need to update my old BH16NS40 drive to play/backup this disc?
Hello everyone.
I have an old LG BH16NS40 drive, manufactured in 2014. It currently has FW1.00. I know it will never be UHD friendly and i don't intend to update it with FW from the guide available here, but i have an issue with a blu-ray i own. Everytime i try to play it, i get displayed a message indicating that my drive needs an update to play the disc correctly. I tried three different backup softwares, including makemkv, but everytime i start the BDMV folder in VLC, i get the same message without the blu-ray actually starting. If i choose to skip menus in VLC the movie starts, but obviously i can not access the menu this way.
Is this an issue with the disc, do i need to update my drives FW or do i actually need a newer drive? I'm lost...

Does the problematic disc have AACS v82 encryption? If so, eventually MakeMKV will support it.
If you got another drive that supported LibreDrive, you could play it now.

The disc has AACS v19 and BD+ v2010.9 protection. Sadly i don't have another drive at the moment.
Can't find a TGZ dump file in the MAKEMKV folder. I will try to back it up again with "log debug messages" enabled once i'm back from vacation in a few days and post it here.
This is a screenshot of VLC player when i try to start the disc.

Have you installed the support for BD+? This is libbdplus, the vm files and all of the BD+ tables.
I don't have many disks with BD+, but I have still been able to play them in VLC.

Yes, it is installed. Other BD+ protected discs play without issue.MrPenguin wrote: ↑Thu Apr 17, 2025 2:02 pmHave you installed the support for BD+? This is libbdplus, the vm files and all of the BD+ tables.

Sorry, should have included it in the original post: The A Team

libbdplus does have some tables for "The A Team", although I cannot tell if they match your particular disk without also knowing your disk's MK and Unit Key. Could you make your disk's AACS/Unit_Key_RO.inf and AACS/MKB_RO.inf files available please? Either as attachments, or by providing a download link?gumajatsu wrote: ↑Thu Apr 17, 2025 2:58 pmSorry, should have included it in the original post: The A Team
