best option for playback of UHD backups with dV?

Post by pesos »

For years I've been playing back my UHD backups from makemkv via my oppo203 and more recently my chinese oppo knockoff. No real issues, but getting it turned on and navigated by my wife and daughters doesn't really work.

Is there a better option to consider? It's been a few years since I've looked around and wondering what alternatives I might consider.

Thanks.

CoreELEC running on something like a Ugoos AM6B+ can now play DV profile 7 properly.

Thanks! Yes went down a bit of a rabbit hole the last hour and landed on the amcb+ as well lol. Can that be driven/"streamed" via the apple tv for ease of use by wife/kids or does it need to be driven directly itself? If the latter I'm not sure how much of a win it is vs. the oppo interface?

I'm pretty sure that the AM6B+ needs to be the thing doing the decoding and plugged into the HDMI port on your TV. The CoreElec running on it could be pulling from a Plex server or a Kodi server or probably just about anything.

It could be the case that your family doesn't care all that much about DV most of the time. You guys could primarily use the AppleTV most of the time. Then, on movie night, you could navigate things on the other device to gain the benefits of DV.

Yes, they couldn't care less - only I care about DV and audio fidelity :-)

But I guess what I'm trying to figure out is, if the am6b+ would need to be independently driven then it doesn't really seem to offer anything over my existing oppo clone setup?

I don't have direct experience with either an oppo clone setup or the AM6B+.

I do know that the folks on this forum who do know would say the AM6B+ is the best, bug free way to play DV profile 7 MEL or FEL properly.

Yeah, the oppo players (and clones) do Profile 7; it's just a basic text-and-folder based interface so not "pretty" and no pictures for the kiddos. But it doesn't sound like coreelec would really significantly change that setup (other than some nice pictures).

If you rip to ISO instead of MKV and put a picture in the same folder, e.g. movie.ISO and movie.jpg the Oppo clone will show that picture. The process with Makemkv to generate ISO is rip to folder first and then make an ISO with Imgburn. Direct ISO is very easy if you use XReveal or if you still own an AnyDVD licence.

I have friends who also convert profile 7 and 8 MKVs to ISO for their Oppos. If you are interested in that I can give some hint.
