Have you tried downloading the latest KEYDB.cfg file, copying it into MakeMKV's data directory (i.e. where MakeMKV also writes its TGZ dump files) and restarting MakeMKV?

Rebooting MacOS fixes that problem but MakeMKV still fails on the No Time To Die UHD disk. No files saved message.

Also fails to copy the Planet Earth III disks.

So, no progress.

This reminds me of the good old days of DVDs.

Maybe copy & paste the MakeMKV log of trying to rip Planet Earth III into a post. Failing to copy is different than failing to decrypt a disc. If we can see your log, we might be able to understand what your trouble is a little better.

I ran Planet Earth III first and saved that log with a Planet Earth suffix. Then No Time to Die which is added to the first log. The 2nd log with the No Time to Die suffix contains both failures.

Both discs show more or less the same thing. Both discs are decrypting correctly and the rip is starting. There's a spot on the disc that the optical drive is having difficulty reading. Once it hits that spot, it can't get past it and the rip fails.

The standard advice is to gently clean the disc and try again.

All 4 brand new (unopened until I removed the cellophane) disks have this same problem. There are lots of files on the disk, they all fail. It seems unlikely.

But still worth checking, because new disks are never guaranteed to be "pristine".

The disks appear to be perfect. Not even a thumbprint of mine from their removal from the case.

Based on my multi-decade experience with both watching and ripping DVDs, this is an encryption problem. Vendors had their own algorithms and it would take time before the hardware would catch up. Because DVD players weren't upgradable, this meant buying a new player every couple of years.

VLC can't play the disks either, says "Your input can't be opened...." I have 3 Blu-Ray external drives, one of which is compatible with ripping Blu-Ray. They can all rip DVDs. But none can play these particular UHD/4K Blu-Ray disks. The disks play fine in my Panasonic DP-UB420-K player connected to my TV.

The Matrix Resurrections in 4K ripped just fine.

The fact that both of your disks already have entries in KEYDB means that other people have owned copies of these exact same disks for a while now. I think we'd have heard if these disks were created from an "unusual" master disk.

If cleaning your disks doesn't help then do you have a second UHD drive that you could use for comparison?

Can you copy /BDMV/STREAM/00018.m2ts from "Planet Earth III" or /BDMV/STREAM/00294.m2ts from "No Time To Die" from the command line? E.g.

This test removes both MakeMKV and VLC from consideration, and checks whether even the Operating System (MacOS?) can read the disks.
