Disc disappearing half way through rip

I've ripped 4 BD so far with no issues. On my first UHD rip, I'm getting an error around half way through the rip

It's like the disc just disappears?

I am using a Pioneer drive in an external Other World Computing enclosure (with external power). The OS sees this drive as a 5GB/s device, so I think the USB3.1 is being properly converted to USB-C by my adapter.

Any ideas what's causing this? I've ordered a dedicated USB 3.1 type B to USB-C cable to rule out adapter issues.

Edit: I noticed it happens at a different offset each time. On another attempt I got

An issue can happen when the drive takes too long to decode data, and the OS decides to declare it "dead". This can happen when the drive reaches a speed that exceeds it's available power, common with USB devices. Your getting a higher-capability cable will likely help.

You need only USB 2.0 speeds. Also type C defines the mating form, not the speed.

Try a USB cable with thicker wires/lower AWG. You also want a power supply that can deliver >= 2 amps. If you're stuck with type C, a "charging" cable might be your best bet since they seemingly have thicker wires and meet the USB 2.0 (4 conductor) spec.

Type C "data" cables typically use higher AWG since there has to be at least 9 conductors inside the sheath I believe. The higher the AWG, the thinner the wires, so this is bad for the purpose you're attempting or any other power related applications. They make special type C "PD" data cables specifically to overcome the higher AWG problem.

Right now I am using a short USB-C to USB-A adapter. It has worked fine for other BD discs, just not this large UHD one.

Are there any OS settings I can tweak to prevent the drive from being detected as dead?

According to System Information, the drive is not asking for any additional power from the OS.

I don't have that enclosure or use MacOS for anything block device related, but I will say that it seems like you have good enough hardware, so it might be a software problem. Can your drive read UHD discs? I don't know how to interpret "Device not configured".

I rip on macOS all the time. My Pioneer drives are in Vantec cases instead of the OWC cases, although I have two non-Pioneer drives in OWC cases. Either case should be fine.

Are you sure you want to rip dozens of copies of the movie?

Does it work if you make a decrypted backup of the disc? (click the icon of the yellow folder with the green arrow on the first screen of MakeMKV) Once a backup is made, you can open that backup with MakeMKV and create .mkv files without having to read from the optical disc again.

Turns out this was a damaged disc. I have since tried other UHD discs and was able to rip with no problems.
