Multiple "Angles" on Ratatouille

Post by dancrocker »

Perhaps this has been covered already, but I couldn't find mention of it so I thought I'd post about it in case it helps someone.

When I open Ratatouille with makemkv, I see 3 playlists of the movie. They are all exactly the same size and runtime. But, the segment lists are different. They are labeled "Angle1, Angle2, Angle3". When I put the disc in my player, there doesn't seem to be any way to select which one to play from the menu.

I ripped all three and looked at them with vlc. I think the different versions correspond to different language selections. In the first couple of differences I looked at were cases where there was something with writing in the scene. What was weird is that the first version was English, and the last two were French. Not sure why there are two French versions. Perhaps there are differences that I missed.

I found something similar with the movie "Up". In this case, I found English, French, and Spanish.

In both cases, the first title in the list was the English one.

So Disney Animation Studios and Pixar like to alter scenes to reflect the languages that are selected when viewing the movie.

On your Blu-ray play you would need to set the language to something else (French probably for this movie) and one of the other angles will play with the altered scenes. Iirc, in Ratatouille, the title card and credits are in French, and there are small changes to some of the scenery, like signs or newspapers would be in French, as opposed to in English on the default angle.

You also see this with English releases of Japanese anime moves like from Studio Ghibli, where Angle 1 will have the title card and credits in English and Angle 2 would be in Japanese and will play if you set the language to Japanese.

This makes sense, though how would you know which angle to choose.
Is there a default, where angle 1 is always English, and angle 2 the main language of the country where the disc is sold (like French or German), or is there no way to find this out, beside ripping all and then finding the correct language to suit the need?

In MakeMKV, for most, if not all, of Disney's 4K releases in the U.S.A., the .800 mpls are English versions.

For the 1080p Blu-ray, Angle 1 would be the English language on the U.S.A release most of the time. But if you still aren't sure, searching Google or this forum for you specific movie usually pulls up someone that has figured out the correct playlist already. Also you can always rip them all and delete the unwanted versions.
