Hello!
Which firmware would be better for me to use?
My model is Buffalo BRUHD-PU3-BK.
Here are the Buffalo firmware options I found:
DE_Buffalo_BRUHD-PU3_BN12-MK.bin
DE_Buffalo_BRUHD-PU3_BU10.bin
DE_Buffalo_BRUHD-PU3_BU12-MK.bin
Are the following two firmware options also compatible with my model?
DE_LG_BU40N_1.00.bin
DE_LG_BU40N_1.03_MK.bin
Additionally, what are the functional differences between these firmware versions?
Can I use this method to unlock UHD functionality on Windows 11, Windows 10, or macOS 15.2?
Thank you!

The advice is to flash to BU40N_1.03MK.

Trouble flashing a USB LG BP50NB40

Post by DoubleBizzy »

Sorry for the trouble, hoping you can help please.

I've been using this Slim Portable Blu-ra / DVD Writer BP50NB40 SVC Code NB40 for a few years on Blu-Rays and a few DVDs. Have a ~2009 Marley & Me Blu-Ray that had too many hash check errors. Read some posts, I think the disk is clean and in good shape, also realized I was on firmware 1.00 so I thought I'd upgrade the firmware. Read the old posts and the new SDFtool, and several posts about people being told to "follow the directions" and do both the write and the recover. Felt confused but tried anyway - big mistake.

Successfully wrote bp50nb40-nb50 1.03 (slim external drives) and that shows up. Now in MakeMKV the LibreDrive Information shows Firmware Type Patched (microcode access re-enabled), version 1.03. The Drive Information also says revision 1.03.

When I try to Recover to BU40N 1.03 MK, the first weird thing that happens is I click on the bin, click open, and the SDF FLasher (v1.3.5) still shows "please select a firmware to write". So I do it again and this time it appears in the menu. When I click start, it appears to work and is done in less than 5 seconds (much shorter than the write took the first time).

But now the drive doesn't really work and still shows the 1.03 information above, both in makemkv and in the flasher tool. The front button or "eject" does make the green light flash, but results in "disc is being loaded" animation and nothing happening. I've even tried manually opening and closing with a paper clip, it doesn't change the issue. Tried unplugging / replugging, tried restarting the computer.

Also tried Recover using BP60NB10 1.00 MK and had the same issues, both the the menu selection and the "done successfully" in a few seconds but no change from the first write.

So then I tried Recover to the bp50nb40 nb40 1.00 clean bin, like this post (viewtopic.php?p=129930#p129930), but it has the same issue of not loading the bin the first time I select it, "done successfully" in about 3 seconds, and having the same 1.03 info / label. So, sadly, it did not work for me.

Then tried Write using the nb40 1.00 clean as well, no effect.

What did I do wrong the first time trying to update the firmware? And what am I doing wrong on the Recover side? Thank you so much for any help you can advise, sorry for yet another newb apparently not following directions, and Merry Christmas (also, Festive Festivus)!

To use Recover, it will prompt for 2 firmware files.
For the first one, you must choose the bin for the drive's CURRENT firmware, which you said is bp50nb40-1.03 so choose that one.
For the second file, choose the firmware bin you want to flash.

Just wanted to report success and say thanks! I bought an Archgon MD-8107-U3 (ASIN B07BC9F98J) identifying as an HL-DT-ST BD-RE BU40N with firmware 1.02 2120-12-01 17:16, used SDFtool Flasher 1.3.5 in VirtualBox¹ to write DE_LG_BU40N_1.03_MK.bin followed by DE_LG_BU40N_1.00.bin², and then was successfully able to read my first UHD disc using MakeMKV 1.17.8 on NixOS.

¹ Before resorting to VirtualBox I tried using the sdftool CLI for Linux but `help all` just hung.
² I tried stopping at 1.03 MK, but reads failed with "KEY NOT PRESENT" etc.

I want to start by saying thank you for all the work that's gone into these tools and guides.

I read all the instructions but want to make sure before I screw it up that I'm about to do this correctly.

First, I did a read to create the firmware dump.

Second, this is from MakeMKV:

Code: Select all

Drive Information
OS device name: F:
Manufacturer: HL-DT-ST
Product: BD-RE WP50NB40
Revision: 1.03
Serial number: [redacted]
Firmware date: 2121-07-08 16:09
Bus encryption flags: 17
Highest AACS version: 65

LibreDrive Information
Status: Possible, not yet enabled
Drive platform: MT1959

No disc inserted
If I understand correctly,
Select F: HL-DT-ST_BD-RE_WP50NB40_1.03_xxxx_xxx
Select Write
Select the firmware DE_LG_WP50NB40-NB50_1.03_MK.bin
Finally, do a cross flash by using the recovery option to selection the F: again with the new firmware and choose DE_LG_BU40N_1.00.bin (or do I want the BP60NB10 1.00-MK?)

Thanks again.

You cut it off. What's the error code?

Do you have MakeMKV installed in the default location?
Is the drive tray empty and closed?

Any new Buffalo drives should have encrypted firmware so ensure there is a green tick beside "Encrypted Firmware". If there is a red X, click on it to toggle it to a green tick.

Flash the drive with BU40N 1.03-MK to remove the firmware encryption, then flah BU40N 1.00 if you want to use other ripping software besides MakeMKV.
Cheers :D

I followed the steps you provided and now it shows up as
LibreDrive Information
Status: Enabled
\
Though now when I open MakeMKV the disk icon is still spinning and it says "Disc Loading". I first downgraded it to 1.03-Mk then 1.00

After leaving it in for a while it says "no disc inserted"

After leaving it in for a while it says "no disc inserted"
always let the os see the disc first then open makemkv

you may also have a power issue plug both cable direct to back of pc or laptop no unpowered hubs
if that dont work get a high powered usb hub 35+ watts

copy paste your makemkv drive info section so we can check you flashed it right

The OS doesn't recognize the disc.
I tried attaching both the USB and Boost USB cables directly to my computer and now the drive won't even show up in MakeMKV.
So I can't share the drive information.
