Upgrading in Linux, overwrite or de-install/re-install?

Post by Helen Weals »

I have an install of 1.17.7 and am quite pleased to the extent that I have purchased a non-expiring license. Now I would like to upgrade my installation to the newer v1.17.8 .

My question is whether I need to de-install and then follow the instructions in the pinned release topic in this forum to re-install, or if I can just do the install over my existing copy.

My OS is Linux Mint 20.1 with the Cinnamon DE.

Thanks in advance.

Being a cautious type, I have multiple versions of MakeMKV installed. If you have the disk space, they do not interfere with each other, so long as they're installed in different directories.

If you run the install program on Windows, it defaults to erasing the old copy and putting the new version in the same place. I cannot say what the default is for Linux.

To answer the main question: you can just overwrite the existing install to update to a newer version.

However... MakeMKV 1.17.8 just happened to bump up its minimum glibc version as a dependency, meaning your distro needs to be from ~2022 or newer.

Since you're on Mint 20, that's going to be a problem unless you're willing to do one of these...
-Upgrade your entire distro
-Compile a newer glibc yourself and patch the binaries. See viewtopic.php?p=160864#p160864
-Install MakeMKV from a flatpak build

Thank-you both Woodstock for the information and advice.

Also thanks for segfaulted for the information and the additional caveat about the glibc version. I'll look into the glibc install information you linked to.

On the other hand, I've a couple of machines with the newest version of Mint installed so perhaps I should look at moving the MakeMKV install to one of those for now.
