Just tried ripping this movie and it doesn't work. It's stuck at about the 45min mark in the ripping process and my drive is going crazy.

"doesn't work" can mean many things. Your description seems to indicate that the decoding starts (they key is valid), but an error is encountered later. Usually, these are read errors, and cleaning the disk helps a LOT in these cases.

Apologies for being a bit vague.

The disc is brand new. It came out of the plastic and went into a brand new Pioneer drive so I am not completely sure what is happening towards the end. I did see that the allotted time for completion went from 12mins to nearly 2 hours and my drive was making noises that seemed to signal it was struggling to read. After about 25mins, I decided to cancel the process.

However, somewhere in the process, it hit a difficult-to-read section, which it's trying VERY HARD to read. Most drives will time-out when this happens, but some don't seem to. The main thing is to try cleaning the disk, as that is likely the problem. With UHD disks this happens sooner than with regular Bluray, but any disk that has sat in the package for 6 months or more is suspect, and should be cleaned with a soft, damp cloth. They make microfiber disk cleaning cloths for this sort of thing,

You clean ACROSS the read path (center to edge, not around the disk). Usually, you can see a difference with the first wipe.

Strangely, I popped the disc back in just a little while ago and gave it another try. It completed the rip without a hitch. An unexplainable random event that befell the first attempt? Who knows.

Nonetheless, I will keep your advice in mind as I go through my library. This is the first time I am digitizing it and I have somewhere in the realm of a thousand discs ahead of me - about 40% of those being UHDs with about 15% of them still in the plastic.
