Hi,

is there any chance for UHD with this OEM USB3 BD-XL drive? When inserting an UHD disc, it only makes funny sounds, then stops.

Respectfully, I'd like to point out that this seems to be incorrect.

The drive I successfully flashed on Linux was an ASUS drive manufactured by Pioneer. I even reported on the successful flash attempt in full detail right here on the forum. The drive was on up-to-date encrypted firmware and is now on an older, non-encrypted MK firmware.

If you just want to sell a piece of windooze software to me (as suggested by your signature), you are out of luck.

if you want to be proven wrong post your makemkv drive info section
if your drive platform is mt1959 or mt1939 its not a pioneer its an LG

oh look mt1959 you say your drive was

MakeMKV confirms v3.10 and shows:

LibreDrive Information
Status: Enabled
Drive platform: MT1959
Firmware type: Patched (microcode access re-enabled)

Before flashing, I confirmed the correct drive with "lsblk -S". Recommend this before something bad happens.
so you are incorrect giving people false hope and misleading them and trying to prove a person wrong who is always helping people here.
i give away all the info for free the charge for those who dont want to do it them selves with the guide.

That was NOT my intention. But thanks for the clarification.

In fact, I'm shocked that ASUS has to resort to more than one OEM supplier for their drives. So if this is a Pioneer drive and the other is in fact an LG, then of course you may be completely right, I just can't tell. I have to depend on what I read here and obviously I didn't notice the difference between MT19x9 types. It is not really to be expected that this little change in the number has to do with a different manufacturer, it looks more like another model from the same manufacturer.

Sorry for the mix-up.

So if this is a Pioneer drive and if there is an alternative firmware with less artificial restrictions, is there a reason why this FW is not just available for download and has to be requested? I doubt the legal situation differs from the situation of other FW packages.

Btw., I just flashed the FW of another ASUS/LG drive remotely for a friend using MeshCentral remote control. He picked up the drive by recommendation after I've successfully flashed my own.

As for flashing with Windows, yes, of course I can do that. It's an external USB3 drive after all, so it's not "stuck" to the Linux system.

If look on the sticker of your Asus you will see it says LG bh16ns40
The pioneers are way better I stopped selling LG/Asus desktop drives back in 2019

Is there a way to flash it so I can play ultra hd blu rays?
