Pioneer BDR-212V

Post by Orion »

I just bought a Pioneer BDR-212V which was manufactured in March 2022 and has firmware 1.01. First run of MakeMKV created a dump*.tgz file (should I send it in?).

Out of the box, it does not recognize UHD and LibreDrive information shows:
Status: Possible, not yet enabled
Drive platform: RS8F00
Firmware version: ID06

Best BD ripping speed so far is 7.6X but tends to be 5.4X or slower. I did run the Pioneer drive utility but it's for MacOS and from 2020. The only option it gave was adjusting the quiet setting to performance.

I know Pioneers cannot be downgraded so it's nice that I'm starting with 1.01. I have seen a variety of posts about cross-flashing this drive to other models. For example, it can use BDR-212UBK or BDR-S12JX.

I would like to have LibreDrive for my drive. It would be nice to rip UHD. And it would be great to speed things up.

Which firmware model(s) should I consider (and version)? Can I just use the ones from Pioneer or is there one available from here? (I could only find the "all you need firmware pack", the "downgrade enabled firmware v.2", and the "mk-firmware-pack" and did not see any Pioneer options.)

Thank you so much!

There's no publicly available flasher for Pioneer drives.
Cheers :D

Please explain the following:

What does the automated flasher do? What is the result from it compared to how the drive is now? What will I be missing without it? Can't it just be cross-flashed with the firmware from one of the other models? Does MakeMKV address the LibreDrive aspect of it?

Thanks!
