The Martian - Extended Edition 4K Ultra HD main title?

Post by scottlindner »

I couldn't find a topic for this so I'm posting. Typically I find this just Googling. I'm ripping The Martian Extended Edition 4K Ultra HD. There are two main titles 800 and 801. Based on the segment map comparison and total run time, I suspect 800 is the theatrical version and 801 is the extended edition since the extended edition adds about 10 minutes. Hopefully someone can confirm just so this is available for others to search.

yeah that's correct for the US version.

This media is extremely weird since the movie is split into separate files for each chapter. When you play the movie off a full back-up, it's like it's playing a playlist file so it knows what chapters to include for the theatrical version and what is included for the extended version.

Does anyone else have an issue with playback for the extended version where the audio gets out of sync every time it goes to one of the few added bits from the extended version?

YES! Came here to see if it's just me that had that issue.

I just saw a notification about your reply as I have not been here for awhile. I learned the issue is with the way the extended version injects the extended scenes. I don't know if the underlying players used by Plex, Jellyfin, etc. have been updated or not as I just went with the theatrical version once I learned this.

I was never able to get the 4k version of this disk to work in makemkv no matter what I tried. Lots of AV sync error messages in the log and it would eventually give up and fail. The disk is all over the place. Fortunately it came with Bluray as well which was laid on on the disk in the same all over the place method. I've never quite seem disks arranged like this.

You could try to make a decrypted backup and merge the m2ts files listed in the segment map yourself in MKVToolnix. Only the chapters wouldn't be included out of the box.
Not sure if this solves the AV-sync issues but it's worth a try. Additionally you could try a different player and see if it can handle the file better.

This is normal for discs which include multiple versions of a movie. The feature is called seamless branching and allows to link different segments that are played based on the selected playlist.
Otherwise you would need to add a complete movie file for all versions, which would exceed the space of a single disc.

I just saw this thread, and wanted to throw in my experience. I too had issues ripping the UHD version of The Martian, I kept selecting the first version listed at 48G and it always kept failing after about 3/4 of the way through. I sent the disc back for a new one and still receive the same exact issue. I ended up ripping the bluray version and it came out ok but not what I paid for.

I switched to the release version on the same disc (45G) and it ripped just fine. Someone on reddit suggested doing a backup of the disc and doing it from there, but when I did the backup the entire tree that was built in storage was a total of 14G on disc so that clearly is not correct. I guess for now it's either 4K release version of bluray extended version.

When doing a backup, I didn't select the decrypt option, but wouldn't selecting that just trigger the same issue with the extended edition?
