I am satisfied with MakeMKV with only minor complaints.
If I might mention one little rather annoying thing: I rip my dvds to my internal hard disk (C:). But at times I have an external usb hd drive connected. And for some strange reason, MakeMKV always switches the path to that external hd drive whenever I plug it in. I don’t know how many times I have been fooled by that.
No idea, why it does that.
Happy with MakeMKV but …

When you open the settings, what do you have set for Video?
If you wan to FORCE a location for where to write to, you need to have "SemiAuto" selected, and something in the box under that. Example, I have "SemiAuto" and "Z:" in there. That causes MakeMKV to start with Z: and the name of the disk for the path.

Thank you both for the information. I will look into the settings, that must be the solution.
