Just making sure, a Pioneer BDR-212 built in 2019 with original 1.0 firmware should be a workable unit for UHD discs? Is there any advantage of upgrading it to one of the pre-12/2022 firmwares?
No major advantage long as it's a UHD model it should work and if it's not you can email me for a cross flash kit if it's before 12-22
I might need to do that. I think I was confused on the model numbers thinking all the 212 models were basically the same, but this one appears to be a DBK model and not the UBK model. It was fairly cheap though, and the seller confirmed it is the 1.0 firmware which is well before 12/22.
EDIT: The more I am reading, the more I'm afraid this was a bad purchase if I want to read UHD...SMH.

Yeah the dbk does not do UHD but I can make it read them email me when you get it

I have a 212DBK and as they are not a BDXL drive, even when flashed, the DBK won't read triple layer discs.
EDIT:I had mine CF with BDR-S12UHT firmware and would not rip any TL UHD discs. I have since CF to BDR-212JBK firmware and have successfully completed 2 x TL UHD rips. Not sure why the S12UHT firmware wasn't working well but any-who, all good now.
Cheers

Billy's cross flash package worked like a charm. This inexpensive 212DBK is now showing as an S12JX and it ripped the first TL disk I threw at it with no issues.
One of the early posts in this thread said that the FW for a BDR-XS07S / BDR-XS07UHD could be downgraded. However, some other posts in the thread leads me do believe that this isn't true. Can someone clarify?
Trying to sort out how to get a Pioneer drive (preferably a slim/external) that can be used to rip UHD content. I've traditionally stuck to bluray, but want to start getting into the UHD content.

no they cant be downgraded
the xs07s if it has old fw can be crossflashed to the uhd version but those are pretty rare now i haven't been able to source them since august.

If you are in Europe you can buy a Verbatim 43888 which contains a Pioneer UD04. No flashing needed. If you are in the US and buy the right Verbatim it contains a Pioneer UD03 that can be cross-flashed to UD04.

The 212DBK and all other "12" drives can be flashed to either 212JBK or S12JBK and are then fully UHD and BDXL capable.

This is good info to have posted. The key (at this time) is finding a 212DBK that has pre-12/2022 firmware.

Drives from 208 and upwards can be made UHD compatible.

Even if the firmware is after 12/2022? I thought that was the criteria when looking for a drive however didn't know if that recently changed since I'm currently in the market for one myself.

Best to get one already UHD enabled and tested from a seller in your region.
Cheers

The statement about 208 or higher is only applicable if the firmware on these drives is older than Dec. 2022.

I plan on doing that and reaching out to billbillw once I get more storage added to my server.

Ok, thanks. I wasn't sure if something changed and someone found a way to get it to work on drives post Dec 2022 because I thought that might be a possibility down the road.
