WH16NS40 "clicking noise"?

Yesterday I was in the process of ripping a disc using MakeMKV and the blu-ray drive was working properly. But, I decided to play a game with my friend so I cancelled the process and installed the riot client. After I finished playing, when I went back to rip the blu-ray, but when I did the WH16NS40 was no longer picking up the blu-ray. When I inserted the disc, it sorta ran and made a click sound a couple of times, before displaying that no disc present. Then I tried resetting my computer and it didn't fix the problem, I tried changing the blu-ray player to the latest firmware and it didn't work.

Please let me know if you have the solution or any suggestions, Thanks!!

What firmware do you have it's likely the sleep bug and you didn't follow the recommend fw in the guide

I tried flashing it to WH16NS40 1.00, but it didn't fix the problem. I then tried flashing it to the WH16NS40 newest MK file and it didn't work. Maybe I did something wrong, not sure what the problem is. Thanks.

I'm experiencing what sounds like the exact same problem. No real spin up, just a few clicks and the no disc message.

I'm guessing it has something to do with the bluray laser array dying or being under powered because the drive can still rip DVD's completely fine.

Man, I should have just tried flashing anyway from the beginning because it seems to be working now after swapping firmwares. Still pretty sure it wasn't the sleep bug, because I have heard that constant seeking noise before. This instead sounded like a a quick double click without any attempt to spin up or seek. And the drive would also still let me rip if I gave the it like an hour to cool off in between rips. It also wouldnt let me rip anything over like 60gb. If it was over 60gb is would just stop near the end. I was super fixated on it being a physical issue.

If it was over 60gb is would just stop near the end. I was super fixated on it being a physical issue.

LG drives also have a reputation for occasionally getting "confused", requiring a power cycle to reset... briefly remove power to an external drive / power down PC for an internal drive. This will typically set things right... until next time.

Coming back to say, I think this drive is officially cooked and that I just got lucky with my last couple rips.
It won't read anything now, DVDs, Bluray, UHD, nothing. It won't even attempt to spin up.
No amount of power cycling, rebooting, flashing has done any good.

Also the clicking sound sounded like if you were to flick a paperclip with your nail twice in a row. It would happen a couple times and then MKV would report no disk.
Which sounds very different from how I have heard the sleep bug described, and how I believe I have heard the sleep bug sound in person.

Glad I invested in a Pioneer last month, but it sucks losing my second faster drive cause I still got quite few things to backup.
I think I got about 300 UHDs out of the LG?, and a handful of DVD/Bluray shows. And they ripped fast man. My LG could do a feature film in like 30-40 minutes. I am tempted to buy another one to support my Pioneer.

For any future peeps that come across this thread, the Pioneers are worth it. I haven't had a single issue with mine since I got it.
Whereas the LG has been troublesome since day one. The LGs definitely tear through disks incredibly fast, but there were several occurrences where my LG failed to read a disk that my Pioneer happily ripped. One the topic of speed, another thing I noticed in my LGs last few days was that the read speed was getting slower and slower for each rip until it was eventually slower than my Pioneer.

You might try a CD cleaning disc as a last resort. It will clean both laser lenses and CDs are easier to read than DVDs and BDs. However, I had also one that just died and nothing helped.
