Hi all,

New to the forum but not to ripping discs. Ive used Makemkv to rip dvd/bluray without issues for years. Im moving into uhd discs and most rip fine but there are a few that ive had to play with to get ripped but there are 2 in particular that i cant get to work at all. Is this a drive issue or is this a bad disc issue. To be clear even if i have a disc that wont work i can put a different one in and it rips fine. I have a usb bu40n and an internal asus 16wdt that i flashed using the firmware from these forums. The asus is on 3.02 and the bu40n is on 1.0.

If you've gently cleaned the disc and it still doesn't work in either of your drives, then you probably have a disc issue.

That's really all there is to work with, though. There's no such thing as a "valid error" - if errors are being reported, it has to do with some sort of defect in the disc, a problem with the drive, compatibility of the drive to read the particular disc, or encryption errors (which are reported very differently).

The biggest thing to understand is that this process is a data disc read, not playback. Playback processes have tolerances built into them to simply "skip over" a very short fault and carry on with the rest of the content. Visually / audibly, you may not even notice as it may amount to little more than a dropped pixel or two on the screen. When you're reading the data off of the disc, the expectation is that it's 100% perfect or can be corrected. The errors you are seeing are a result of data NOT being able to be read correctly or corrected.

likely because it is double encrypted how did you copy the BD to you HDD before Bluray drives have this thing called buss encryption for bluray discs it basically garbles the data

Yeah but you need to copy it that way I'm guessing your discs is scratched or dirty try cleaning it if that don't work replace the disc

That's the thing about playing vs. ripping. Playing skips errors, while ripping doesn't. Ripping sees the problem at sector '946470912', and stops to get it correct. You might hear a glitch when playing, and see the spot when it actually does the skip, but the drive has not been asked to read-until-complete, which takes it offline for a bit.

Hi, I have a stubborn disc in Star Trek: The Next Generation: Season 7 Disc 1 Episode 3 is failing to rip each time with read errors. I have cleaned the disc and tried again a few times, and I noticed the link of one of the errors says:

The simple workaround is to copy all files from the disc to the hard drive manually, without MakeMKV running. If you succeed in this, there is a fast and simple way to convert such copy into encrypted MakeMKV backup that can be opened by MakeMKV later. See our forum for details.

I found I was able to copy the .m2ts file in question but not sure what all else I needed for the "See our forum for details" part.

Interesting. I've been trying and trying to get a Blu Ray disc to read. This time I doused it heavily with denatured alcohol and I got the first show off.... let's see if the second one comes off. Interesting. The drive slowed down in the usual spot, did a bit of error recovery, worked, slowly read a few hundred MB, and then took off at full speed again (about 4.7X). That was the last show I needed. I guess if there are no obvious scratches, try different cleaners and be very liberal. I even used my fingers to really loosen up whatever was on there. Oh, the errors were the usual read errors in one form or another. This is one of the new 4K Panasonic drives.

Thanks to all the previous writers. I'm sure I picked up the alcohol trick somewhere in this thread.

Hello.

Running MakeMKV v1.17.3 win(x64-release). No longer opening blu-rays. I get the "No disc inserted" error. Tried several different disc, a few of which I've successfully ripped in the past. Currently working just fine for standard def DVD (just completed a test rip - no errors, rip plays fine). This has only started in the last week.

Any suggestions?
