Does HDDVD still work?
I have been offered a relative's HDDVD collection of about 80 discs. I don't have a drive, so I will need to spend about $50 to get one. Before I do that, I wanted to make sure that MakeMKV can still rip them. I searched the forum and it looked like maybe recent versions no longer support this format, but I didn't see anything conclusive. Thanks!

I went ahead and gave it a shot and can report success. Ripping HDDVD works just fine under 1.17.1 on Linux with an LG GGC-H20L drive with the exception of a couple of what I assume to be rotted discs.

I'm trying this with my HD-DVD drive and discs and I'm seeing issues. Did 1.17.3 stop supporting HD-DVD?

Can you at least do a "Backup" of the disc?

Re: Does HDDVD still work?
There have been some posts lately that HD-DVD support is broken in 1.17.3.

I don't think that's intentional, just a bug. If you can keep going with 1.17.1 for the time being, that's what you should do.

HD DVD is definitely broken support. At least in 1.17.4.
Some discs fail to open, some discs crash MakeMKV.
The discs can be read using AnyDVD (no it was not active when using MakeMKV)
With 1.16.7 it works.

That was a bit premature. 1.16.7 can open SOME discs. Others still fail.
And: In any case the resulting subtitles are unusable. Especially the subtitle handling could save a lot of time. With other tools, a lot of manual steps are involved.

Did you try 1.17.5? https://makemkv.com/download/
The release notes say there are bug fixes for HD-DVD.

Re: Does HDDVD still work?
New to this. I have several HDDVD's that I haven't replaced on Blu-Ray. I presume I need an HD-DVD drive to back them up using makemkv.
