About a year ago in January I bought a new WH16NS60 to replace my ASUS that died, and its worked fine for 1080p discs, but it seems the number of 4K discs that fail to rip and report Hash, Read, and corruption errors is way too high to be a bad disc.

Rather frustrated because I paid $120 for this drive not even a year ago and I've got about 5 discs I just can't rip due to corruption errors, has errors..etc.


Below is an example of just one rip on a brand new disc just opened out of the box, but I have 3 others I can't rip at all, Annihilation, Ender's Game, and 300.

Did you try cleaning your UHD discs? Use soapy water and wipe off with a microfibre cloth.

They are clean as a whistle, not a spec of anything anywhere, brand new out of the case. There is literally nothing to clean. One disc, maybe.

But 7 discs in a row having issues? I can't imaging its the discs with that kind of failure rate.

My WH16NS60 stopped reading anything but DVDs awhile back, while my BU40Ns continue to work fine. The same may have happened to you.

Most UHD's have an invisible to the naked eye film on them from processing that can cause read issues. Try cleaning them!! You won't know for sure until you try.

I've never had to clean the discs, and they have not a spot of imperfection. I can't see this many discs in a row failing. And I have cleaned them but I should not have to clean them if they are spotless.

I cut many repetitive lines out of the log.

Are you using a microscope to check how clean they are? If not then your claims of "spotless" are meaningless. Uhd discs pack data into a very small space and any imperfection will cause issues. Even ones you can't see.

Don't be stubborn and listen to the advice to clean the disc. Then try again.

Not being stubborn, I DID clean them, it just made no difference.

The sheer number of discs that fail to rip with hash check, and report AV Sync or Corruption issues is far too high.

Hence, the WH16NS60 is just junk and I don't think I'd want to replace it with another one.

Sorry to hear you are having trouble with your WH16NS60. You should really buy a Hitachi BU40N or a Pioneer Drive. The Hitachi WH16NS60 is getting that bad that I have decided to stop selling them and now I am offering them at clearance prices. Hitachi has told me they are EOL product now and are offering at very cheap prices. I am selling the Hitachi Desktop drives very cheap just to clear, as the product no longer seems to be reliable. Billycarr stated on his seller page that he had found around 25% of these desktop drives to be defective and he no longer was selling them. I am finding the same here in Europe. Three years ago this was not the case. Sad to see such a good product no longer reliable. I have been testing the Pioneer BDR-XS07TS Cross-flashed to BDR-XS07TUHD and it is incredible to say the least. Any 4K disc I insert, it reads the disc in seconds. It has backed up these BD100 titles below without a hitch. If you are in the US I suggest you buy a BU40N of Billycarr or a Hitachi drive. The BU40N is a great drive and so is the Hitachi Slim drive.

I've had DVD drives and DVD burners that were approaching 10+ years, and the only reason I stopped using them was so I could replace them with Blu-Ray drives. I bet if I took one off the shelf even after it sat for nearly 3 years it would still be working.

As the BU40N is a slim drive is there any issue flashing it via USB? I have one of the Vantec enclosures that doesn't allow flashing, but its not big to get an 18" SATA & Power cable off my gaming PC to flash a drive.

all cases that work with optical drives should now support flashing the developer made a workaround for lg/asus drives.
flashing over usb has been fine for like 3+ years now no usb was only in the dos flash days

Out of curiosity do we know the root of the failures? is it tolerances on the laser carriage guides, or inconsistencies in the speed of the motor drive? I find it surprising that these fail that often, I guess must be manufacturing tolerances, and shows up more often with the data density of multi layer Blurays

I am fortunate that I have a good relationship with Hitachi. On my last order of drives, I found after testing each drive with 4 discs, "BD100, BD66, DVD and 1080P Blur-ay" , that I had a 20% failure rate. I sent the failed drives back to Hitachi for replacement.

Three years ago I might have had 1 faulty Hitachi desktop drive in 100 units. So to be honest I don't know what has happened.

The BU40N's are a completely different story. I have had none faulty in over 1000 drives, so they are extremely reliable.

I did have a batch before Covid 19 that were making circular scrapes on the discs and destroying the discs, but Hitachi quickly sorted this problem out.

With Pioneer, I have had no faulty units to date, which is a good sign.
