Got my new BDR-X13UBK drive and it isn't reading 4k discs. It was my understanding that Pioneer drives containing "U" in the model number all have UHD reading capability, but I have tried several discs and none read, same as the last Pioneer drive that didn't have a "U". When I open MakeMKV with a disc already in the drive nothing happens. When I put a new disc in, MakeMKV sees a disc has been inserted and attempts to read, then gives up after a minute and says "No disc inserted".

Here's the status window info:

Drive Information
OS device name: D:
Manufacturer: PIONEER
Product: BD-RW BDR-X13
Revision: 1.01
Serial number:
Firmware date: 2022-02-18
Bus encryption flags: 1B
Highest AACS version: 77

LibreDrive Information
Status: Possible, not yet enabled
Drive platform: Pioneer RS9400
Firmware version: ID56

No disc inserted
I Told you you should have waited.... There is a X13U 1.01 on the list but the firmware might differ. Send a PM to mike admin and he can dump your firmware to his server to add support.

A big warning to everybody purchasing UHD capable Pioneer full size drives!!!

Starting with the 13 series you can't assume anymore that the letter "U" in their drive names also allows UHD capability!!!!

These are UHD capable:

X13U-S
S13UBK
S13U-X

This is NOT UHD capable:

X13UBK

Edited and corrected on Nov. 3rd, 2022.

Ultra HD Blu-ray offers 4K resolution as well as richer color tones, for more realistic images.
*Playback of Ultra HD Blu-ray requires a CPU that supports Intel Software Guard Extensions (Intel SGX) technology. Intel SGX has been removed from Intel 11th generation and newer CPUs, and support for SGX may be removed on new versions of Intel drivers or utility programs such as Intel SGX and Intel Management Engine drivers and firmware in the future. Such changes could cause these platforms to lose support for Ultra HD Blu-ray movie disc playback.

I have to correct myself. The S13U-X is UHD capable. The US site must have been corrected since it was listed as not UHD compatible. I will modify my post above.

I have order a couple of these models to test amongst others. When I saw your post I thought I would double check in case Pioneer USA had given me wrong information.

Anyway no harm done and have a nice day.

Just bought the BDR-X13U-S . It looks like the firmware should be supported (X13U 1.01) but I'm still getting a Status of "Possible, not yet enabled" even after enabling internet access. Is there something I'm missing or forgetting to do? Or is it not supported yet?

Drive Information
OS device name: F:
Manufacturer: PIONEER
Product: BD-RW BDR-X13U
Revision: 1.01
Serial number:
Firmware date: 2022-02-28
Bus encryption flags: 1B
Highest AACS version: 61

LibreDrive Information
Status: Possible, not yet enabled
Drive platform: Pioneer RS9401
Firmware version: ID29

No disc inserted

I too am having issues with a newly received Pioneer BDR-X13U-S.

I load a UltraHD disk (i.e. Deadpool) into the drive and using MakeMKV v1.17.2 on Kubuntu (KDE Ubuntu), the app can see the disk, but not "open" the disk:

From the "Info pane"

Code: Select all

Drive Information
OS device name: /dev/sr2
Current profile: BD-ROM
Manufacturer: PIONEER
Product: BD-RW BDR-X13U
Revision: 1.01
Serial number: XXXXXXXXXXX
Firmware date: 2022-02-28
Bus encryption flags: 1B
Highest AACS version: 60

LibreDrive Information
Status: Possible, not yet enabled
Drive platform: Pioneer RS9401
Firmware version: ID29

Disc Information
Label: DEADPOOL
Timestamp: 2016-04-05 14:48:45
Protection: AACS2.0/C v60
Data capacity: 54.54 Gb
Disc type: BD-ROM UHD
Number of layers: 2
Bus encryption flags: 80
Snippet from the log after attempting to open the disk:

Code: Select all

Can't read AACS VID from disc - most likely current AACS host certificate is revoked by your drive
Saved AACS dump file as /home/larry-local/.MakeMKV/MKB20_v60_Deadpool_4B6D.tgz
LibreDrive compatible drive is required to open this disc - video can't be decrypted.
Failed to open disc
Not sure what other information I should be providing. Please advise!
Thank you!

Guys, don't just post - read.

This applies to both larry.schapker and tmackery. Just a few posts above I stated:

As I understand it, both larry.schapker and tmackery said they have a BDR-X13U-S which is UHD compatible I think. Perhaps mike admin needs a firmware dump to be able to specifically support those drives?

I'll be glad to do so if I have some basic instructions (i.e. I'm new to "driver Firmware" <grin>). A simple list of instructions (maybe there is a link?) would help greatly.
