Not sure. Maybe the manual or specs provide with more info. Perhaps the tv shows meaningfull data during DV playback.
A visual comparison of displays from P7 FEL source and its P8.1 counterpart could also tell you more.

Major difference with FEL being processed is that output will be full-blown 12 bit DV. Vs 10 bit when there's no FEL. Change in dynamics and color is noticable, but I can't say I'm overwhelmed. To my eyes, having a tv calibrated yields more awe. It's much discussed how much (and if) the 2 bits really make a difference, since nowadays tv's even can't saturate fully on 10 bit luminance. And very few (if any) are able to process 12 bit with RPU internally. I think it all depends on personal taste and type of (player and) tv. There's people that prefer (10 bit) HDR10+ over DV FEL+RPU. Everybody should decide for themselves, on their own equipment. Which also goes for tv-led vs LLDV, I'd say.

Probably a silly question but I know the UB820 isn't recommended for file playback but I love its tone-mapping feature. Should I just keep that if I wanna play discs and use the x800m2 for files? Does self-tone-mapping even matter for files, DoVi or otherwise? For reference, I use a ForMovie Theater for display.

My biggest frustration with this device was all of the clicking that was required to select a movie

I decided I needed a movie wall so I hacked together a prototype this weekend

It utilizes plex for all of the media metadata, posters and file paths

Full FEL works on Chromecast w Google TV 4k and Tivo Stream 4k, been discussed here plenty before. I do it myself with both of mine and single stream dual layer FEL in MP4.

LG C7, C8 C9 play FEL in mp4 perfectly.

FEL in not something that can be ignored. On some movies it's 15-20% of the movie size.

You can mux a P7 Dual Layer mp4, thats not the Problem, DV will be triggered. But only MEL will be displayed. There are many Tests in the www, Original UHD BD ISO with OPPO vs. Dual Layer MP4 / MKV. Also Shield Pro 2019 and other players like Zidoo triggered DV with a Dual Layer file, but the playback is only in MEL. Trust me or not, your choice.

You can test it easy, make a DV P8.1 file of the Dual Layered file and playback both. You see no difference. Good movie for testing is Braveheart, superb FEL Layer.

Yes, playback of BL only will be 10 bit.
If FEL can't be processed, of course there's no need for it. Nevertheless it may be convenient to keep FEL muxed. Maybe in the near future FEL playback (in mkv) will be more commonly supported by players. Also, as @daddy mentions, already tv's process FEL properly.

Note that single layer P7 doesn't exist. P7 always carries BL and EL. It doesn't matter whether these layers are interleaved into one videotrack (single track dual layer) or they're carried in two separate videotracks (dual track dual layer).

Two well-known single layer DV files are P8.1 and P5. P8.1 carries a (backwards compatible) HEVC HDR10 baselayer, like you find on UHDBD.
P5 - often delivered by streaming services - carries a (non-backwards compatible) baselayer encoded in 10 bit IPTPQc2 full-ranged colorspace, proprietary to Dolby.
