2K VS 4K Blu-rays

When I go to the MPC-HC website it states the following,
MPC-HP has not been under development since 2017 and to please switch to something else.
Therefore, it looks like MPC-HP is officially discontinued.

What would you say are the top (3) mkv players, (free or one-time purchase) for Windows? That would be taking into account for 4K-UHD playback with HDR. I did use the mkv search bar to see if this was an existing topic, but I couldn't find one. Rather than start a new topic, I thought just to ask here.

I know you mentioned MPC-BE and JRiver Media Center, would you say they are in the top three? If so, can you give me one more player?

It doesn't seem that you think very highly of VLC, which is fine. I always thought VLC was one of the top mkv players, if not the best. I'm used to VLC and have been using it for years. I like the minimal interface, full screen option. I guess VLC is behind with some of the other players for 4K-UHD playback with HDR. My point is, if they end up releasing a new version this year, (which is very possible) and become considered one of the top players, I would rather just stick with VLC.

To getr MPC-HC you download the K-Lite pack. (I use the Mega pack myself). https://codecguide.com/download_kl.htm

If you like VLC then use it. No one is stopping you.

I tried MPC BE and madVR. Although, there is no way to actually install madVR going this route. I would need to leave the madVR folder somewhere on my PC. For this reason, I am not a fan of it.

I looked into K-Lite pack as you mentioned. This seems to include and actually install madVR. However, I could not download it without being forced to install some type of Edge extension. Therefore, I'm not a fan of this either.

I guess that I will just stick with VLC. Do you think they will offer better HDR support in the future? Is anyone using VLC for 4K-UHD, mkv files?

Nope. I rip all my movies to mkv fiels and store thenm on my NAS. I stream them to my HTPC running LibreELEC (kodi).
