USB Adapter Problems
Hello,
I got myself a LG BH16NS55
At first it didn't work with my adapter I got
https://www.mylemon.at/artikel/startech ... 1-2-5.html
So to exclude points of failures, I connected the drive internally and it worked / flashed it according to the ultimate guide.
Now I don't have space in my PC case so I bought a recommended adapter,
the Unitek 1099Y, like recommended in the ultimate guide.
But I see the same behaviour still:
I connect the USB to the PC and after 1-2 minutes I get an error message, saying my USB device couldn't be detected.
Both Adapters use external powersupply and in both cases, it was connected beforehand.
So I updated my chipset driver (AMD B450) and I even updated my BIOS while i was at it.
Still the same behaviour.
The device manager shows "(Set Address Failed.)" next to the USB device.

Re: USB Adapter Problems
What if you try a different USB port, perhaps on a different USB bus?

Re: USB Adapter Problems
Tried that as well, but only 2 different ones.. might as well try and test all of them and will update this post.
Also I tried several solutions which came up during google searches:
uninstall USB driver from the device manager & restart
disable fast boot
disable "suspend usb devices" in power settings
to no avail.

Re: USB Adapter Problems
This is in my opinion the best adapter with the best compatibility:
https://www.amazon.de/Sharkoon-DriveLin ... 28&sr=8-15
However, if the problem is with your PC's USB ports you should get a PCI USB card. But make sure it has a NEC / Renesas chip and no VIA chip.
https://www.amazon.de/Kalea-Informatiqu ... 734&sr=8-8
To play it safe I would go for the PCI card. However, this Sharkoon adapter is great. Works even with my third party USB ports and allows flashing firmware with these LG drives.

Re: USB Adapter Problems
...and call me paranoid. I had once an AMD system and hardware compatibility - or the opposite - was always a mess. I will not build a PC anymore based on AMD hardware for those reasons. If you run only Office and blah-blah it's fine. I had various TV capture cards etc. It was hell!
The same applies if you have an additional SATA chip from Marvell in your PC. All kinds of issues and most likely you can't flash your LG drive if it's connected to those Marvell chips. It would be a "marvell" if it would work...
Now you got the whole story of an old guy being burnt by PC hardware issues regarding USB and SATA. Well, there would be more issues but those are not related right now to those issues of this thread.
To be continued..... as it says.

Re: USB Adapter Problems
The Vantec Adapter looks ok I guess, but it comes with a US plug only?
Also I possibly need to pay quite a bit for shipping as well.. so I don't know.
The Sharkoon Adapter I actually remembered that I got that one, but it never worked for drives.
I tried it again, and it actually works, nice!, however the formfactor is quite bad.
The adapter hangs down from where it is plugged in, it is quite bulky as well.
I definitely won't be getting an additional USB PCIe card, since I don't have space for it anyway and
since the sharkoon adapter worked, its definitely that which needs work.
The next adapter I am going to try is the Unitek 1039-Y

Re: USB Adapter Problems
If the Sharkoon adapter works now why will you even consider another one?
Anyway - thanks for the feedback it works. I knew...

Re: USB Adapter Problems
The Unitek 1039-Y works with my BH16NS55!!
Finally, and unlike the Sharkoon adapter, the power supply is much more compact and the SATA connector doesn't put any strain on the ports when plugged in.
It is also quite slim.
It doesn't come with a on/off button though but that doesn't bother me too much.
I still wonder why the 1099-Y didn't work, but whatever.
