Messed up flashing my WH16NS40

Post by Skirge01 »

I've tried following the numerous posts to fix this myself, but I'm not sure what my next step should be.

My drive was manufactured January 22, 2020, has a SVC Code of NS50, and SDFtool said it was an unencrypted 1.04 ROM. Before starting, I did a READ with SDFtool and dumped the existing firmware and I still have those files.

Then, I flashed to HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH16NS40-NS50-1.05-NM00900-212005061440.bin from the mk-firmware-pack-20200720.zip, but the drive just kept spinning, locked up MakeMKV and the drive, and would never recognize the inserted disc.

I tried to recover from that via SDFtool and flash to HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH16NS60-1.02-NM00100-211810291936.bin, which is where I currently am with the exact same issue as the previously flashed firmware.

I'm not sure if I can recover with SDFtool as the drive currently is or if I need to use dosflash. I've already created a WinPE flash drive, just in case, but would like to know what my next step should be, rather than guessing. Here's how the drive currently looks in MakeMKV:

Drive Information
OS device name: D:
Manufacturer: HL-DT-ST
Product: BD-RE WH16NS60
Revision: 1.02
Serial number: [I've seen people redact this, so I did]
Firmware date: 2118-10-29 19:36
Bus encryption flags: 17
Highest AACS version: 65

LibreDrive Information
Status: Enabled
Drive platform: MT1959
Firmware type: Patched (microcode access re-enabled)
Firmware version: 1.02
DVD all regions: Yes
BD raw data read: Yes
BD raw metadata read: Yes
Unrestricted read speed: Yes

Your help is greatly appreciated!

Power down the case and unplug the USB from PC restart everything and see if it works.

I assumed you meant the WinPE flash drive. If so, I made sure to do that. I shut down, switched off the power supply, waited 30 seconds, and booted back up. Now, the disc does stop spinning, but the activity light stays on and MakeMKV comes back with this after a little while:

Error 'OS error - This device does not exist' occurred while reading 'BD-RE HL-DT-ST BD-RE WH16NS60 1.02 KLHK1LI0303' at offset '524288'
Error 'OS error - This device does not exist' occurred while reading 'BD-RE HL-DT-ST BD-RE WH16NS60 1.02 KLHK1LI0303' at offset '524288'

Error 'OS error - This device does not exist' occurred while reading 'BD-RE HL-DT-ST BD-RE WH16NS60 1.02 KLHK1LI0303' at offset '32768'

At this point, the drive is inaccessible via any means in the OS (though it does still "show up" in Windows Explorer with the title of the disc) until another reboot. I also tried the eject button in MakeMKV and it claimed to be attempting to unmount, but nothing ever happens.

I would try with the drive directly to sata see if that helps to rule out the case being bad or get one of the adapters in the UHD guide the uniteck is cheap enough and always useful

This was actually inside the case, directly attached to SATA and the PSU. But, your comment prodded me to do the reverse and use an external USB cable and power supply to see if anything changed. Sure enough, it worked just fine once removed from the case. After a few reboots and tests externally, I put it back in the case with a different SATA cable and used a different SATA port. Everything seems to be working again.

Thanks for the assistance, Billy!
