4k blurays failing to rip - corrupt or invalid at offset

Post by SlyMikael »

I've been using makemkv for a while now and finally got ahold of one of the recommended drives for UHD Blurays (LG WH16NS60) and applied the firmware update. Of the 33 discs I've ripped I have 5 that failed. I tried cleaning all of them and looked through posts on this forum trying to find ways to get them to work.

They all get fairly far into the rip before I see multiple "The source file ** is corrupt or invalid at offset **, attempting to work around" lines in the log and it fails, this also happened after I tried using the backup method and running the rip that way. Also 1 movie just causes a fatal error and kills makemkv. I'm wondering if there's anything I can do outside of replacing these discs.

Also from what I can tell the .m2ts files that come out of the backups appear playable with VLC so to some degree I assume they're salvageable, I just want to be able to run them through handbrake so I can burn foreign subtitles + reduce the file sizes for a Plex server.

I've tried:
cleaning discs
cranking up retries in settings
backing up then running again
rebooting and trying again

Welcome to the world of ripping UHDs. Unfortunately, the data density on the discs makes them generally much more challenging than BDs or DVDs. The options are to get new discs or get new drives. After being at this for a few years, I have stacked up four different drives. Sometimes it is a complete crap-shoot as to which drive will work. I have a LG WH16NS60 as well, and it works pretty well. The LG BU40N is also really reliable. However, a scratched disc is a scratched disc and there isn't much you can do.

Ya I never had anywhere close to this failure rate with standard Blurays. I may end up getting a 2nd drive like you mentioned but it's not financially in the cards at the moment. Luckily nothing is scratched as I've taken pretty good care of them (helps that I bought them new too)

In case anyone happens to come across this later, the advice about cleaning the discs is severely understated. After meticulously wiping away every speck of dust and even the slightest of imperfections, I managed to get every disc that previously failed to finally rip correctly. I used a microfiber cloth, glasses cleaner, and a bright overhead light. As previously stated, UHD discs are extra temperamental and will need far more care than other discs.

While I do completely agree, I just had a UHD disc (Free Guy) that I just purchased, and wouldn't rip. I cleaned, and cleaned, but there was a ... not really a scratch, but a line that was barely visible, that I couldn't get to come off. It was too perfect to be a scratch (followed the arc of the disc perfectly). At any rate, I finally took the disc back to Target this morning, and switched it out with a new one. It's not completely done ripping yet, but I am almost done, and it has gotten farther (by far) than the original disc.

From what I've seen on here it sounds like a manufacturing defect, I'm not sure if there's any solution for that other than returning it as you did.

I had a couple that didn't rip. I used windex on them and they ripped straight away. Give that a shot.

Make sure there is no ammonia in the glass cleaner, because ammonia can cause plastics to cloud up. Not a good thing, and it's pretty much permanent damage.

I have ripped maybe 40 UHD blurays. I'd say I've had probably 3 or so that wouldn't rip, that I cleaned up with Windex and was able to get it the second go round. I've had 3 discs that I've had to return (Tenet, Godzilla, and Free Guy) because they just wouldn't rip and the next disc I got worked just fine without Windex. I have an Asus BW-16D1HT drive. Not sure if this helps anyone, but it's nice to know you're not alone in the experience. :D

I have an interesting situation. Trying to rip Spider-man: No Way Home, but keep getting these errors. My rips fail at about 24 GB each time(Ignoring all languages that are not English). I was successfully able to play the disc back on my PS5, as well from the computer from VLC(Will say I did not watch the entire movie. I started playback and viewed the menus).
The odd part is I can copy the files all off the disc. It drops to grueling slow speeds around that 24 GB spot, but it does copy. I then tried to use MakeMKV from the copied folder, and it still cannot rip past 24 GB.

Anyone have any ideas?

Was this drive an external one, powered by a USB port? If so, was it powered by a single USB, or two?

These errors are consistent with running out of power while extracting "too fast" for the power connection.

This drive was installed into the chassis powered by SATA power connectors. I have installed an LG WH16NS40 and flashed it successfully. I'm running a rip of the same Inception USH Disc right now and will report back.

after getting into ripping my entire collection, mostly blu rays but I do have over 300 4k uhd's. I was using the LG wh14ns40 flashed to wh16ns60 and I got through my entire collection of over 1000 blu's and 4k,but I mostly ended up ripping only the blu-ray from my 4k sets, because I share all my movies on plex with my family, some live with me and others play over the net. I did not want to encode or alter the files in any way, and 4k was too much to play via the internet. i can direct play here in the house so it didn't matter for those of us here. the wh14ns40 did a great job, copied all blu rays just fine no issue, but recently I got a new pc and decided I would rip the 4k discs, and encode them down so that family cross the net could enjoy. As I went through the over 300 4k discs, I ended up with over 175 that either wouldn't load at all, or failed half way through rip. Drive still reads all regular blu-rays with np, but 4k discs are very very hit or miss. For what I paid for the drive I cant complain, was like 60 bucks on Amazon and only took 5 minutes to flash it. Because of all the issues though, and some newer 4k titles not even coming with a blu-ray at all I needed a drive that would handle all discs. I did a ton of research and landed on a Pioneer drive. Specifically the Pioneer BDR-XS07S. It is a pricey drive I'm not gonna lie, but it is of much higher quality than any of the LG or Asus desktop drives. The drive is sold on Amazon and Walmart and I'm sure tons of other retailers, however Pioneer updated the firmware not tooooo long ago, and it will not allow ya to use as a libredrive and rip to your hard drive. Also no public way to flash or even firmware to flash to it. I got with Billy here and got one ready to go from him for not much more than the drive costs at retailers, and shipping was included. I am currently going through alllll those 4k discs that would not load or copy with my LG, I'm about 20 discs in and no failures yet! It even loads discs soooo much faster than the LG EVER did. And its a usb drive with no external power so I can take from pc to pc if need be. I cannot recommend this drive enough! Pricey but well worth it. Also can't recommend Billy enough. Paid for my drive and had it in my hands 3 days later. Keep in mind were both in USA and on same side of states. When I saw you mentioned having an LG drive, just thought I would put this out there.
