Asus BW-16D1HT 3.10 on Unbuntu no longer reading Blu ray discs

Sometime during the last couple of weeks, my Asus internal drive stopped recognizing blu ray discs. MakeMKV reports "no disc inserted". It does, however recognize DVDs.

MakeMKV reports the following:

I've tried restarting the computer and reinstalling MakeMKV.

Any thoughts on what might be the problem?

fully shut down the pc pull the plug and hold the power button.

then turn it back on and see if it reads blurays if not its time to replace the drive.

Restarting your computer does not reset the computer hardware. Since they've dropped the reset button from most computers nowadays, you have to remove power to get the motherboard to actually reset hardware to a known state.
