Question about read speed of WH16NS40

Post by franklinspears »

I was just wondering how fast these drive are expected to read. I get about 4x-6x for UHD disks, but much faster for normal blu-rays. In fact, the drive is much quieter when reading UHD as opposed to HD disks, leading me to believe the disc is spinning slower. Is that normal?

I'm on the 1.02 WH16NS40 firmware.

Thanks

MakeMKV has a thing called Speed Control. Also, reading UHDs is 'harder' than reading a regular blu-ray. There's more data crammed into the same physical space. If your drive is working fine, I'd be inclined to leave it alone.

Yes, that is the normal speed for "friendly" drives reading UHD discs.

Yes, you can adjust the speed but if it is working well, please don't do anything.
Cheers :D

what about fast&furious speeds for the LG WH16NS40? I have set speed control (0=99) on ASUS bw-16d1ht and had variable success on UHD 4K DV 3-layer discs ranging from 7x-11x speeds. I am contemplating whether I buy the LG drive to check its max speed. thank you.

A good speed comparison is found down further in this thread. So LG-BH16NS40 Cross-Flashed to LG-WH16NS60 1.02mk seems to be a nice combo.

Thanks y'all. Wanted to make sure I was doing things right. I think I'm going to keep things as is, instead of risking breaking the drive or finding out later that there are errors in the files or something.

I just received the WH16NS40, cross flashed it to MK WH16NS60 1.02, I get 4-7x without speed control. I have ripped few 4K at the same speeds. I will try speed control next. BTW, no disc will explode or break nor will you have errors in the extracted data (in theory : -) )
