This disc uses newer version of AACS protection

Post by mcleveland92 » Mon Apr 21, 2025 9:01 pm

Do I need to do anything in regards to the 'This disc uses newer version of AACS protection' line? The disc goes through fine and rips normal? Do I need to provide the dump files? How do I make one, if I do need to submit one?

If you could post your TGZ dump file here as an attachment, people could examine it for you :). Otherwise, maybe just cut-and-paste that link into your browser? Or just click on it?

To be honest, I would have expected a TGZ dump file for a disk using MKBv82...

How do you create the TGZ dump file? The disc doesn't error out, so how do I make a dump file regardless pass or fail.

If your backup works then you shouldn't need to create a TGZ dump file. However, as an educational exercise... :).

A TGZ dump file is essentially a ZIP(-like) file containing the following:
  • The contents of the disk's AACS/ directory, although not necessarily its AACS/DUPLICATE/ directory contents (for obvious reasons).
  • The contents of the BDMV/META/DL/, BDMV/CLIPINF/, and BDMV/PLAYLIST/ directories.
  • A discatt.dat file for the disk. You can create one of these by using MakeMKV to create an encrypted disk back-up. Alternatively, you could create a discattd.dat file by creating a decrypted backup.

Thanks, MrPenguin — just confirming your dump file expectations.

Based on your description, the TGZ dump includes:
  • The AACS/ directory (excluding AACS/DUPLICATE/)
  • The BDMV/META/DL/, BDMV/CLIPINF/, and BDMV/PLAYLIST/ directories
  • discattd.dat file from decrypted backup
That matches exactly what I have available from the dump.

Here’s the disc info for reference:

That dump is highly corrupt. No idea how you created it but it wasn't created by MakeMKV. Also, if you're using my tool, and you followed the directions, it would populate the KeyDB with a key for that title and copy the keydb.cfg to your MakeMKV data directory for you. You simply need to add the device keys do your keydb.cfg and run my tool again against that disc again. That process is documented in the post where my tool is downloaded from.

Thanks, SamuriHL — appreciate the quick feedback.

Just to clarify: the files in that TGZ archive came from a MakeMKV-created decrypted backup, not a raw AACS dump. I wasn’t using your tool at the time — I was following the standard MakeMKV backup process and then packaged the relevant directories based on the structure you described in other posts.

This is my first time trying to work with your tool, and I’m not sure where to get the proper device keys or how to structure the keydb.cfg file so your script/tool can actually extract the needed keys and generate a proper dump.

Have any sources of guidance(posts) to do what is being asked?

Read the section on disc info carefully. Everything you need is linked there. The keydb helper contains no keys itself. It's mostly a front end for findvuk. But if you are able to follow the directions there and add the key that's linked in that post, it will open mkbv82 discs and add them to the keydb so makemkv can open them.

The decrypted backup doesn't contain the right information to help. It would need to have files from an encrypted backup.

Just wanted to follow up now that I’ve gotten everything working as expected using KeyDB Helper and FindVUK.
All three discs in the Demon Slayer: Hashira Training Arc Blu-ray Set (MKBv82) validated successfully, and VUKs were generated.

Here are the entries that were added to my

Code: Select all

keydb.cfg
:

Code: Select all

0x4676CC850DD08A3264350C22A56EF2E0841B9053 = AOA_23901_DISC1 [Demon Slayer: Hashira Training Arc Disc 1] | D | 2025-02-13 | M | 0x5ABC11F4113BE5FDAA226BF405F0311A | I | 0xC64294424254A0476D47503AAFD3FF97 | V | 0x22BD27651A3B2F08747DFC4CB020DF6C | U | 1-0x595FB75796D0E17982E14BFC19B8A648 ; MKBv82 - VolumeSize: 32770949120 (BD)

0x9B866D70B472CC950210DB5F128F47E6C665D993 = AOA_23901_DISC2 [Demon Slayer: Hashira Training Arc Disc 2] | D | 2025-02-17 | M | 0x292611575B778F1E536AB53D085D4F7C | I | 0x7C71500F1F4ED710C617A4A39B4A04C2 | V | 0x669E518502E863687F60F51CADC03063 | U | 1-0x8D0436736BCBDDFF9D500BA535F93560 ; MKBv82 - VolumeSize: 35713187840 (BD)

0x51481E6099958283A10C9DA868568DE4794CEEF0 = AOA_23901_DISC3 [Demon Slayer: Hashira Training Arc Disc 3] | D | 2025-02-19 | M | 0xA63F68387D5A79BCD4583A70E13E8421 | I | 0xA47542C8F3C5C16B6DE11B2CA4C5E6A0 | V | 0x64188AF7F5E7BF3A55FB8EB1AC6F48AA | U | 1-0x7302932BEBF638E4A0AD0280E8287C4C ; MKBv82 - VolumeSize: 29207953408 (BD)
Each disc opened and ripped fine in MakeMKV after validation.
Thanks again to SamuriHL and MrPenguin for pointing me in the right direction — I definitely learned a lot during this.

That said, I'm still seeing this in the MakeMKV log when performing encrypted backups:

Code: Select all

MakeMKV v1.18.1 win(x64-release) started
Using LibreDrive mode (v06.3 id=4C194CE2C4D1)
Backing up disc into folder "C:/Video/backup/AOA_23901_DISC1"
This disc uses newer version of AACS protection. Please let us know about it by visiting http://www.makemkv.com/a/?r/AW+t7MEdRsXy...
Loaded content hash table, will verify integrity of M2TS files.
So to support proper backend review or processing, I’ll now be submitting **encrypted backup `.tar.gz` dump files** that include:
- The AACS/ folder (excluding DUPLICATE/)
- BDMV/META/DL/, BDMV/CLIPINF/, and BDMV/PLAYLIST/
- A `discatt.dat` from the encrypted backup

Hopefully these will now contain what MakeMKV’s backend expects, and allow better support for these MKBv82 discs moving forward.

That should be sufficient to send to makemkv. I'm surprised it didn't generate its own dump file though. Weird. Glad it worked for you!

Okay, awesome — appreciate your patience and guidance on this! It definitely helped clarify the process not just for this title, but for how I’ll handle future discs as well.

I’ve now submitted the encrypted `.tar.gz` dump file directly to svq@makemkv.com, and also shared it here for reference:

Contains: discatt.dat, AACS/, BDMV/CLIPINF, BDMV/META/DL, BDMV/PLAYLIST from encrypted backup.
🔗 AOA_23901_DISC1_DUMP_Encrypted.tar (MediaFire)
AOA_23901_DISC1_DUMP_Encrypted.tar.gz
Contains discatt.dat / CLIPINF / META / PLAYLIST / AACS folders
(1.42 MiB) Downloaded 19 times

Hopefully now that everything’s been validated and properly packaged, MakeMKV can use it on the backend for deeper support of MKBv82 titles.

Thanks again to you and MrPenguin — huge help!

deleted _private_data.tar and found that "This disc uses newer version of AACS protection." went away (obviously before deleting I added the entries mentioned above)
