Is 1.16.0 broken in Big Sur?

Post by cappy2112 »

I've recently installed 1.16.0, but didn't test it until now.
I popped in The Matrix DVD and tried to rip it on an M1 Macmini.

MakeMKV started out ok, but then quickly had problems.
MakeMKV thinks the output file is 5.2KB, and just stops writing to disk.

I'll try another DVD to see how that goes

1.16.0 is definitely broken.

I''ve tried ripping 2 different DVDs using 1.16.0, nothing but errors.

I then tried ripping the same DVD with MDRP, I had no problems whatsoever.

1.16.0 keeps asking me for access to one of my Documents folder, every time I launch it.
I didn't have this issue with the previous version (can I get an older installer BTW?).

The two checkboxes under Preferences/Integration (for VLC & Handbrake) - are now disabled. Initially, I was able to check the VLC box.

What happens if you change the permission on mmccextr in the App bundle?

https://www.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=24651

I think the 'Failed to execute external program 'ccextractor' …' message is because of incorrect permissions in 1.16.0.

Old versions of MakeMKV can be found here: https://www.makemkv.com/download/old/

What permissions should I change it to?

Why didn’t I need to do this with the previous versions?

You need to do a chmod +x on it, to make it executable.

Previous versions included the eXecute bit being set already.

Ok, done. Ripping again.

The program still prompts me for access every time I rip a disc, and the two checkboxes are still disabled.

My M1 Mac does not show a prompt when I launch MakeMKV. Can you take a screenshot of it (https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201361) and post it here? Also, what do you answer for this prompt?

yes, that is my post.
Unfortunately, the crash dump was not that useful to the VLC author(s)

Installed 1.16.1
They aren't addressing the issues I've been reporting. Well, they fixed the permissions issue,
but MakeMKV still prompts me for access to my Documents folder, and the two checkboxes are still disabled.

MakeMKV does not ask any permissions, this is done by OS. I would like what kind of folder the program tries to access, could be a Data directory misconfiguration.

Disabled VLC integration means that the program can't access VLC app to install the libmmbd library - most likely it is caused by a manual install of the older version. Please check the location of VLC bundle, or just plainly re-install VLC.

The picture below makes the user think MakeMKV is prompting the user. This did not happen prior to 1.16.x

I've uninstalled VLC and re-installed it. The two checkboxes in the MakeMKV Integration menu are finally accessible.

However, re-launching MakeMKV after reinstalling VLC, caused another KP.

I've sent you a PM with the crash dump

In macOS Big Sur the folders Desktop, Downloads, and Documents have extra security permissions.

https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-hel ... a35146/mac

Are you trying save rips to your Documents folder? Or is the MakeMKV data directory (in MakeMKV's preferences) set to Documents? Or maybe the log is trying to go into Documents? On my system, a MBA, in System Preferences -> Security & Privacy -> Privacy -> Files and Folders, MakeMKV only has permission to access Removable Volumes. I don't put rips or anything into any of the protected folders.
